25 years ago — Dec. 16, 1982 Crop duster John Cox of Westley escaped unharmed when he made an emergency crash landing at the Crows Landing Navy airfield. Tenbrink Avenue residents Marciso and Efigenia Gama know how to grow lemons. This week, they displayed two monstrous lemons off their tree that were the size of soccer balls and weighed more than three and a half pounds each. The sixth annual Patterson Basketball Tournament got underway this week. Patterson High School senior Rick von Moos was named the outstanding wrestler at last weekend’s 19-team meet in Dos Palos. Susie Cardoza, Chris Dennis and Carolyn Fisher are among 20 Sunday school members who will stage “Listen to the Voices” on Sunday at the Covenant Church. 50 years ago — Dec. 12, 1957 John and Floren Grischott have purchased Martin’s Service Station in Westley. They have owned another station in that community. The annual free Christmas party for kids at the Patterson Theatre will be Dec. 21, co-sponsored by the Patterson Merchants Association, Modesto Bee and theater owners Elmer and Vada Fink. Patterson High School will participate in the World Clothing Week drive, collecting clothes for orphaned children. Vocalists in the high school’s upcoming Christmas concert will be Carolyn Burton, Ila Willhite, Pat Foster, Koni Nugent, Phillip Willson, James McGuire, Margaret Traver, Clora Ross and Mary Traver. The Westley Cub pack and Boy Scout troop had a joint award ceremony and presented numerous advancement awards. Becoming Lion Cubs were Stanley Vizzolini, Jerry Hayton, John Cox and Raymond Perez. Webelo badges went to Jerry Howell, Eudith Hendrix, David Thompson, Leo Durrer, Louis Durrer and Gary Fitzsimmons. Second class rank awards were earned by Troop 79 members Steve Basham, Bill Cox and Bob Vizzolini. 75 years ago — Dec. 16, 1932 An early season cold spell this past week has dropped the temperature to 22 degrees twice and 23 degrees on two other mornings. Those participating in the county’s unemployment relief program will begin repair work Monday on the Del Puerto Canyon road. Patterson workers will be transported to the canyon daily, while those from elsewhere in the county will bring tents and will camp at sites in the canyon. Because of the flu epidemic and the cold weather, all local schools except Patterson High cancelled classes this week.
