Given its record-setting 2007 season, numerous postseason accolades were bound to follow for the Patterson High football team.

Patterson’s varsity football players reaped the fruits of their collective labor Wednesday with 17 individual awards at the fall sports banquet at the Patterson High cafeteria.

Football coach Rob Cozart recognized the players and touched on the immense community support.

“Without you guys — the players — we wouldn’t be here,” Cozart said. “You should be commended for your effort and never-say-die attitude.

“They continued to work hard and didn’t let up. We put on the greatest show in terms of fan support. I loved it, and the kids loved it.”

Keith Yamamoto headlined the awards ceremony, earning the 2007 Western Athletic Conference Defensive Most Valuable Player and WAC Outstanding Linebacker awards. He had 109 tackles and two interceptions through 12 games.

Teammate Robby Samano was the WAC Offensive MVP, with a team-high 17 touchdowns, while two-way starter Johnny Garcia was the league’s Outstanding Defensive Back.

First Team All-WAC defensive selections included Yamamoto at inside linebacker, Josh Mendoza at outside linebacker and Jorden Faatiga and Alfredo Serrano as defensive linemen.

On offense, First Team All-WAC selections included running backs Samano and Gordy Inocencio, quarterback Daniel Reza and offensive lineman Danny Arriola.

Second Team All-WAC selections from Patterson were safety Brian Serpa, wide receiver Johnny Garcia and linemen Adrian Ramirez and Chris Dixon.

Varsity team awards will be announced at a banquet in a couple of weeks.

Junior varsity
Junior varsity football coach Steve Cardoso bestowed the Outstanding Offensive Player award on quarterback Wyatt Young, while Adrian Laurel earned the team’s Outstanding Defensive Player award. JV captain awards went to Jake Saavedra and Hola Tupouata.

“Our team was very competitive,” Cardoso told the crowd. “I’m really proud of how they finished the (last) game. The season really took off after Week 5.”

Freshmen
Freshman football coach Kenny Durham recognized Ricky Howard as the team’s Tiger Pride Award recipient, while running back and scoring machine Efrim Jones received MVP honors. Captain awards went to Josh Chase and quarterback Cody Weinzheimer.

“This is your future team right here,” Durham said of the current freshmen. “This team is going to be pretty good for a while with the talent we have.”
