Seeking compensation EDITOR, As I read the statements made by Assistant Superintendent Michael Gardner in the Nov. 28 Irrigator article, titled “School workers seek district’s help in contract negotiations,” I was shocked by the blatant disregard for the truth. As a classified employee of the Patterson Unified School District for 11 years, I, too, experienced the district’s lack of appreciation and compensation for its classified employees. Because a statement on classified employees’ job descriptions states, “performs other duties as assigned,” I ended up performing duties outside my classification for nearly two years. I discovered this during a meeting with my peers, one of whom was a certified employee, and was informed that the duties I was performing were above my current classification. Many of these were duties of certificated personnel. I met with Mr. Gardner on more than one occasion, providing him with documentation upon documentation, and I have never been compensated for my work. Public statements such as “If a job description is more complicated than what a person is hired for, the district will adjust the pay” are just not true — at least in my case. The district removed my extra duties and has refused to pay me for the work that I performed. If this has just been an oversight, I will send Mr. Gardner my current address, so that he can know where to send my check. Shelley Andersen, Sonora Don’t glorify gangs EDITOR, As a member of the Patterson community for more than 30 years, and a 10-year veteran of law enforcement who often deals with prison gangs, I find the media hype bestowed upon Patterson’s so-called “gangs” somewhat irresponsible. I fully understand both the need for news in our beloved Irrigator and the concerns of local residents, but headlines and cover stories do nothing more than glorify the antics and activities of these common thugs. You can understand the pride and accomplishment these so-called “gangs” receive by seeing their latest shenanigans on the front page, or even a lengthy article, such as the Dec. 1 story, “Police arrest two after attack at Tilton Park.” Every time the word “Runners” makes print, this disruptive group of misguided youths grows stronger, validating their status as a legitimate gang. As a community, we should be more thoughtful in spotlighting future activities of these groups. They deserve no more than an 8-point-font mention in the police log. Josh Callahan, Patterson
