Wind gusts that topped out at 48 mph this week battered the West Side. 50 years ago — Dec. 5, 1957 J.C. Gaither will be the new pastor of the local Assembly of God Church, replacing the Rev. T.E. Patterson’s huge Christmas tree in the downtown plaza is being decorated with lights for the holiday season. The annual community gathering around the tree, when about 700 socks of toys and bags of candy and nuts will be given to youngsters, has been set for Dec. 23.
