Council covers much ground in short amount of time Print E-mail

In its shortest meeting of the year, Patterson City Council on Tuesday gave the Apricot Fiesta $5,000, kept up-to-date on the proposed Crows Landing Air Facility industrial development and decided to close City Hall on New Year’s Eve.

City Manager Cleve Morris updated the council on what jurisdictions have joined in their opposing a proposed 4,800-acre industrial development on and around Crows Landing’s former naval airfield. So far, the cities of Patterson and Newman, the West Stanislaus Fire Protection District, Patterson Unified School District and Del Puerto Health Care District have signed a joint resolution opposing plans by developer PCCP West Park.

The council’s main concerns with the proposal are increased train traffic because of a rail connection to the Port of Oakland and the massive size of the project. The council has said it wants a development that sticks to the 1,527-acre county-owned airfield.

Mayor Becky Campo also briefed the council on her monthly meeting with West Park lead developer Gerry Kamilos. She said he again expressed an interest in talking with city staff and consultants about regional water issues. The council has denied Kamilos’ requests in the past.

Council members decided to wait until their next meeting before deciding whether they would grant his request because Councilwoman Annette Smith was absent, Campo said.

As it usually does each year, the council also gave the Patterson Apricot Fiesta money to promote the three-day downtown event, which attracts tens of thousands to the city.

The board plans to request another $5,000 from the council at its next meeting for the 2009 Fiesta.

In other matters, the council decided to give city hall employees all of New Year’s Eve off rather than a half day as in the past. City employees typically would have to come in for four hours Dec. 31 because of the way their contract is written. Now, city staff can get a four-day weekend.

While the one-hour meeting Tuesday was unusually short, the council has some heavy lifting in store before the New Year. It will meet again Dec. 15 with the Patterson Planning Commission for a general plan meeting. The council was told that meeting could last as long as eight hours, as the council and commission revise the city’s general plan, the document that will guide city growth for decades.
