ON THE TRAIL: Patterson police at Walnut Avenue and Ashwood Lane check on a suspect they Tasered twice after he was found hiding in a house with a butcher knife. Reports of other possibly armed people led to a helicopter search of the area.

A sheriff’s helicopter circled Patterson on Friday night looking for a man with a shotgun following a police showdown in an east Patterson home.

The helicopter’s light focused on local neighborhoods as deputies canvassed the streets. However, detectives suspect they might have been hunting a man who never existed. They now believe confusion surrounding the arrest of a Stockton man that night led to the chase.

Police arrested Jeremy Raphael, 22, after finding him hiding in a home on the 500 block of Ashland Drive, clutching a butcher knife. He was booked on suspicion of trying to injure a deputy, possessing a weapon, trespassing, resisting arrest and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

At about 9:45 p.m., police received reports that someone had driven a vehicle into a small irrigation canal on that same block. People then exited the vehicle and ran toward a nearby house, a witness told police.

Four deputies went to the home, where they found a vehicle in the canal and a door to the house unlocked.

While deputies searched the house, police received two 9-1-1 calls from within the home. The line remained silent during the calls, and police do not know who made them.

No one was inside the house at the time of the break-in, and police reports did not indicate whether the home was occupied or if the owner was contacted.

At one point during the search, deputies opened a closet and found Raphael sitting on the ground with a hand behind his back. Police drew their guns.

Raphael made a move toward a deputy and out of the closet, and a deputy Tasered Raphael.

Raphael dropped the butcher’s knife behind his back, but the shock did not stop him from running out of the house. Police chased him and caught him in the front yard, where they stunned him again, this time subduing him. A deputy received several minor cuts to his hand during the struggle.

Police remained on high alert and began a citywide search for another suspect after detaining Raphael. The early reports of multiple people running from the vehicle coupled with a deputy saying he heard someone cock a shotgun as they searched the home led police to suspect an armed suspect could be at large. In addition, Raphael told police he was with another person, though police characterized him as “uncooperative” when they tried to question him. Police are now uncertain whether other people were involved in the incident.

Deputies took Raphael to a Modesto hospital before taking him to Stanislaus County Jail, which is standard procedure if police use a stun gun on a suspect.

Doctors released him and gave police the OK to book him. Once at the jail, Raphael tried to head butt other inmates and jail staff, and he slammed his head against his cell door, according to police.

Raphael remained in the hospital as of Monday afternoon as a result of those injuries.
