It pays to follow college and professional football. Just ask Patterson resident Bill Garner, who finished the final week of the Irrigator’s football contest with the highest number of correct picks. “I was hitting everything,” Garner said of his final week’s picks. “I knew I was pretty close. I keep up on a lot of stuff. I see the prior week’s games. It makes a big difference.” Garner, an Oakland Raiders season-ticket holder, won $20 for picking 20 of 22 games correctly in Week 12. He already had won $20 in Week 8 and a previous tiebreaker. Stateline, Nev., resident Mark Luiz, who relays his picks to his father, Walter Luiz of Patterson, won the tiebreaker for his 14-10 guess of Patterson defeating Escalon. He missed the actual 12-7 score by just five points, winning a Costco gift card from Farmers Insurance. Patterson’s June Wheeland won the overall contest with 193 correct picks over a 12-week span, edging local real estate agent Ken Halseth by just a point. Wheeland won a $25 gift certificate from a contest sponsor of her choice. “On the weekends, it’s all football,” Wheeland said. “We have three TVs going, two in the living room and one in the den. You’re kind of drug into it. We enjoy this contest.” After Halseth’s 192 points, Dorothy Luiz was third with 191 points, followed by Betty Day and Dick Day, who tied for fourth with 190 points. Lee Williard was sixth with 189 points, while Galen Breasher and Peter Goetz tied for seventh at 188 points. A total of 168 contestants participated in the football contest, which began Sept. 7 and wrapped up Sunday. No one correctly guessed all 22 picks on a single weekend.
