25 years ago — Aug. 12, 1982
Three types of butterflies found only in Del Puerto Canyon were recently named by California scientists.
Kenneth Rowley, pastor of the local Assembly of God Church for nearly five years, is leaving for a church position in Lincoln.

Cami Wells showed the champion polled Hereford bull at the county fair.

The Bill Birch family will host Patterson’s newest AFS student for the coming year. She is Francesca Calligaro of Italy.

Bill Azevedo and Ken Herger of Patterson got into the finals of the Destruction Derby at the county fair, with Azevedo placing third.

50 years ago — Aug. 8, 1957
The Westley Redlegs have won the Newman Little League tournament. Team members, coached by James Earnhart, are Freddie Tafoya, Roy Hall, Don Grischott, Jim Earnhart, Bobby Vizzolini, Frank Parker, Robert Sisniroz, Ferrell Johnson, Stan Vizzolini, Dave Hart, David Thompson, Pat Jones and Tex Ramirez.

Construction has started on a new California Division of Forestry fire station on Sperry Avenue, west of Patterson. The agency will abandon its present station in Del Puerto Canyon, where radio reception is poor and some utilities are unavailable.

The Rev. Gene Willeford has left the First Southern Baptist Church, which he has served the past 11 months, to return to college.

A new organization called the Idle Hour Club has formed here with 24 members. President is Lorene Hendrix. Its purpose is to enjoy social activities and help others in time of need.

Ken Fukuhara and John Bessey, Patterson High graduates in June, were selected to play in the North-South All-Star football game next week in Lodi. PHS coach Dean Shafer will be co-coach of the South team.

75 years ago — Aug. 5, 1932
The nation’s depressed economy is receiving the blame for a drop-off in attendance at last weekend’s Festival of St. Anthony. Although plans were made to host 20,000 attendees, only 12,000 attended, down slightly from a year ago.

Patterson High will open the school year Sept. 5, while elementary schools won’t start until a week later.
Beef roast was selling on special this week for 9 cents a pound, while pot roast was 7 cents and toilet tissue six rolls for 25 cents.
