Community alliance seeks 90 donors in 90 days Print E-mail

Westside Community Alliance has taken a big hit from state budget cutbacks. Now, the group has started a campaign to recruit 90 donors in 90 days, in hopes of getting some help from the community.

The group’s revenue base fell by $10,000 per year when a state grant was cut in July, and officials are looking for money from private donors.

“We’re looking for solid funding, usually through grants based on community needs,” said Dejeune Shelton, president of the Westside Community Alliance. “In order to make it happen, we need community support.”

The 13-year-old group, housed at the Westside Resource Center, 118 N. Second St., offers outreach, support and advocacy for West Side residents, with Patterson as its main focus.

It works with city and county governments, local schools and other groups to help solve community problems.

A state grant, which would have provided $30,000 for the group’s community outreach services over a three-year period, was dropped during rounds of state budget cuts in July.

As a result, the alliance seeks money that is not restricted by government or foundation priorities.

One of the its goals is to start a community awareness and prevention campaign against violence. The group also wants to improve communication between schools, police, parents and community members. In the future, coordinators say they would like to create a youth commission that would aim to make teens accountable for their community.

Cindy Duenas, program director for the Modesto-based Center for Human Services, the group’s supporting agency, said money is much-needed.

“We’re really trying to support their cause and provide a variety of services to the Patterson community,” Duenas said. “And so the ‘90 donors in 90 days’ is the organization’s attempt to connect with the community and get local support for their efforts. … We hope it’s very successful.”

Donors who participate in the campaign and submit their donations before Feb. 5 will be listed in the group’s quarterly newsletter. Names will also be placed on the Community Angels wall in the Westside Resource Center. Donations are tax-deductible. Checks may be sent payable to Westside Community Alliance, 118 N. Second St., Ste. D, Patterson 95363.
