Teens win Turkey Trot races Patterson High cross country runners Jose Cortez and Jack Relva each won a race at Sunday’s Country Hill Run/Turkey Trot. The running races, sponsored and organized by the Patterson-based Tony Williams Track Club, originated at Creekside Middle School. Cortez, a senior, won the 5-kilometer Turkey Trot, while Relva, a freshman, won the 3-kilometer and 4-kilometer races. Cortez was the top Patterson High varsity cross country runner this season. Relva medaled in the freshman 2-mile race at the Nov. 3 subsection meet and Nov. 10 section meet. Parent-child sports event canceled Patterson’s parent-child punt, pass and kick event, originally set for today, has been canceled because of track construction at Patterson Community Stadium. BMX track hands out awards The Patterson BMX facility handed out awards after its most recent American Bicycling Association-sanctioned race Nov. 17. Patterson was well represented in the 13-year-old and 6-year-old novice divisions. Lenado Boykins held off a challenge from another Patterson resident, Christopher Gordon, to win the 13-novice class. Another member of the Boykins family, Tony Boykins, took third in the 15-intermediate class. Steven Gately of Escalon crossed the finish line in first place to win the 5-and-under intermediate division. Cole Schortzmann of Merced was second, and Atwater’s Brenden Bates was third. Ramone Rodriguez of Ceres took top honors in the novice 6-year-old division. John Boyce of Atwater finished second, and Patterson’s Elijah Reynolds took third. Zachary Loftis of Stockton won the 7-year-old expert division, followed by Kory Baca of Los Banos, Johnny Trujillo of Atwater and Modesto’s Damien Diaz. In the 36-40 cruiser division, Melvin Shadrick of Stockton took first place, followed by Ripon’s Frank Steinberg in second and Geoff Willis of Mountain View in third place. Jeff Burgess of Ceres won the main event in the 46-50 cruiser division. Sharlyn Sandlin of Ripon was second, and Escalon’s Peggy Miller took third. Patterson BMX Park, the only one of its kind in Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties is at 16651 Ward Ave., adjacent to T.W. Patterson Sports Park. Signups for Saturday-morning races are between 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Each racer must wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, a helmet and tennis shoes. For information: 247-2037.
