The city of Patterson’s 100th birthday is a little more than a year away, and a group is forming to help the city celebrate with an old-fashioned picnic, a historical play and other events throughout the year.
Though all the events would be in 2009, organizers say they still feel like they are in a time crunch.
“We are just barely getting anywhere,” said Adrienne Chaney, director of Patterson’s Parks and Recreation Department. “We’re starting to make a little more progress now.”
Chaney said several community events in 2009 are slated to have a centennial flavor, ranging from the Patterson Apricot Fiesta to Patterson Repertory Theatre’s Art and Wine Gala fundraiser.
In addition, the city is considering hosting some new events, such as a picnic on the Fourth of July and a historical play during a September event that would commemorate Patterson’s history.
Colton Dennis, cofounder of Patterson Repertory Theatre, envisions the play would incorporate multimedia features, such as film and historical photographs. The production could include historical characters and events from throughout the development of Patterson, he said.
Jenifer West, senior account clerk for the city of Patterson, recently joined the centennial committee as its chair, and she already has lots of enthusiasm for the celebration. Meanwhile, a handful of people already have met four times to discuss the centennial. Still, organizers hope to get more people involved. The Patterson Township Historical Society likely will be the backbone of many of the upcoming events.
Though details of the centennial are still sketchy, West hopes to determine the general shape of upcoming events at the committee’s next meeting on Dec. 5.
“I think it’s going to be a really, really cool thing,” West said.
