Sports aficionado wins Week 11 contest Print E-mail

The passion that fueled Mark Luiz’s love for sports as a Patterson High School football player in the mid-1970s still runs strong today.

Luiz keeps an eye on sports as a college football and pro football aficionado, helping him come out on top during Week 11 of the Patterson Irrigator’s football contest.

Luiz, a resident of Stateline, Nev., correctly picked 21 of 22 games and was just seven points off the pivotal tiebreaker, Patterson’s 31-14 first-round playoff win over Argonaut. His only miss came when he picked Clemson over Boston College.

“I live right by five different sports books,” Luiz said of Nevada’s booming sports gaming industry. “They have eight games a weekend for the pros. I pretty much follow football.”

Though Luiz doesn’t receive a copy of the Patterson Irrigator at his Nevada residence, he consults with a family member before making his picks. Luiz’s prize is $20.

“My dad, Walter Luiz, tells me what’s on the card,” Mark said. “I look up what I think to pick, then I call him back. I pretty much take his word for it.”

Butch Ferreira of Patterson joined four other contestants in missing the actual Patterson-Argonaut score by just a point, but he broke the tie by selecting 20 of 22 games correctly. He won a lower-back pillow from Patterson Chiropractic Center.

“I study the games somewhat,” Ferreira said. “I don’t go online and study the standings. I basically pick the games off America’s Line. I’ve been playing it for about five years. This is my first time winning it. I did pick one upset this week.”

The Irrigator football contest wraps up this weekend with $1,200 on the line for the contestant who correctly picks the winner of all 22 games.

Entries are due by 5 p.m. Friday at the Patterson Irrigator, 26 N. Third St., or must be postmarked by 5 p.m.
