Clubs 50-Plus meets Friday Orestimba 50-Plus Club will meet at 1:30 p.m. Friday at L.J. Newman Hall, 649 Orestimba Road, in Newman. Members voted at their last meeting to purchase pumpkin pies for the gathering. Club members opened the Nov. 2 meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the singing of “God Bless America,” with Lois McBride. accompanying on piano. Thank-you cards were received from the family of Augie Alves and from the Newman Historical Society. A moment of silence was observed for Gertrude Machado. The group sang the birthday song to Thelma Hansen and Al Hernandez. Dorothy Silva won the 50-50 prize, and Mary Gonzalez won the sign-in prize. Sorority cookbook for sale Twelve Preceptor Xi Phi members were present when the local sorority met Nov. 7 at the home of Reta Muller. Carolyn English reported on the October area council brunch she attended; committee chairwomen also gave their reports. Preceptor Xi Phi will host an area council brunch in 2010. The group also celebrated the club anniversary. Betty Carlson reported $15 was collected last month from members for the Westside Food Pantry. Carlson provided a cultural program on her recent tour of Southern California’s Getty Museum. Vicki La Torre won the traveling basket. Preceptor Xi Phi is a chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, which formed during the Great Depression so women could have social contact and cultural programs. Get ready for a hoedown A Girl Scout Hoedown will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Federated Methodist-Presbyterian Church, 45 S. El Circulo. Girl Scouts and their Hoedown partners — dads, gandads or uncles — are invited for dancing, games and refreshments. Girl Scouts and their partners can have their photo taken for $5 per couple. Kudos Scholarship awarded Areli Dohner-Chavez of Patterson was among 20 California State University, Stanislaus, students awarded Mary Stuart Rogers scholarships at a dinner Nov. 2 at the university in Turlock. Dohner-Chavez, the 2002 salutatorian at Patterson High School, graduated last year from CSU Sanislaus with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She is now in the university’s teacher credential program. She is a Salvadorian-American and first-generation college student. Rogers scholarships go to high-achieving upper-division undergraduate students and teacher credential students. The late Mary Stuart Rogers founded the scholarships 16 years ago. Rogers scholars receive varying amounts of financial assistance based on need. McComak leaves for Japan Trevor McComak, a 2000 graduate of Patterson High School and a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, was home on leave this week. McComak trained to be a pilot in Columbus, Miss., and then went on to Corpus Christi, Texas, for advanced training and then to Little Rock, Ark., for C-130 training. McComak will leave today for Yokota Air Base in Japan. He has completed five years of his 12-year enlistment with the Air Force.
