Academic testing, a new physical fitness program and school readiness will be the focus of Patterson Unified School District’s board meeting Monday.

Kathy Pon, the district’s assistant superintendent of educational services, will share information on Project FIITNESS (Fostering Individual Improvement Through Nutrition, Exercise and Student Specialists). Project FIITNESS is a collaboration of the school district, Del Puerto Health Center, Patterson’s Parks and Recreation Department, Westside Community Alliance and insurance company Health Net. Collectively, they make up a group called the West Valley Health Coalition.

Based on results of health screenings, 40 Patterson High School freshmen with high-risk health factors will be chosen for Project FIITNESS, a 20-week physical fitness program that includes mentoring.

Standardized testing
Pon also will give an overview of tests that students take throughout the year, such as the annual California Standardized Tests taken taken by all students and California English Language Development Test taken by English learners.

Tests taken by college-bound students, such as the SAT and ACT, and tests for students in the Advancement Via Individual Determination program also will be discussed.

AVID puts academically average kids in advanced classes and helps prepare them for college.
In addition, Pon will talk about more frequent tests, such as writing tests given to students several times a year.

Readiness programs
Luis Molina, Stanislaus County Children and Families coordinator, will update the board on local readiness programs. The Stanislaus County Children and Families Commission and First 5 California, which formed in 1998 as a result of the Proposition 10 tax on cigarettes, works with parents and children to age 5 to prepare youngsters for kindergarten.
