Fiesta seeks writers, artists
Writers are invited to fire up the computer, sharpen their pencils and put their best thoughts down on paper for the 2008 Apricot Fiesta Poetry and Prose contest.
Contest chairwoman Karen Willard encourages writers to submit a poem, short story or essay, or an excerpt from a longer piece. Entries should be 500 words or less.
An entry can be an excerpt from a journal, a letter or a homework assignment. Poetry of all types will be accepted. Teachers’ works are encouraged, as they set an example for students.
All submissions must be typed. Illustrations are encouraged, but yellow should not be used, as it does not show up on copies. The book is printed in black and white.
Writers should keep a 1-inch margin and be sure to include their name, teacher, home room and phone number, so winners can be contacted. The deadline is March 28.
A panel of judges will read and then rate all submitted material. Judges’ scores are added together, and the top 100 writers’ pieces are printed.
There also is a contest to choose the book’s cover art. Artists should enter their designs on an 8½-by-11-inch piece of paper with a 1-inch margin. The art design must include the words “23rd Annual Poetry & Prose” and “38th Apricot Fiesta” and must be black and white.
Entries may be submitted to Shari Fraga c/o Patterson Unified School District, 510 Keystone Blvd., Patterson 95363; or sent to the Apricot Fiesta c/o Karen Willard, P.O. Box 442, Patterson 95363.
Mailed entries must be postmarked by March 28.
For information: chairwoman Karen Willard, 404-6044; or Fiesta secretary Marilyn Hoobler, 892-3118.
Membership drive under way
Letters are in the mail this week for the 38th annual Patterson Apricot Fiesta, which will be May 30 through June 1.
Membership money and donations will go to Apricot Fiesta scholarships for graduating high school seniors, as well as to pay for the downtown celebration itself.
Individual memberships are $10, family memberships $20 and senior memberships $5. This year, the fiesta also has a special Platinum Fireworks membership of $38 for individuals, businesses and families.
Those who contribute will receive a fiesta decal and will be mailed the 2008 Apricot Fiesta schedule of events in the spring. Platinum members also receive an Apricot Fiesta gift.
Besides membership fees and general donations, the fiesta needs need volunteers and chairmen and -women. This year, leaders are needed for the Fiesta Arts and Crafts contest and for the Miss Patterson parade float.
