Body found in the Delta Mendota
An Antelope man turned up dead in the Delta-Mendota Canal near Crows Landing on Monday afternoon during routine cleanup work by the San Luis-Delta Mendota Water Authority.

Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department said the body, found at about 1:27 p.m. about a mile south of Marshall Road, matched the description of a 53-year-old man whose car had been found in a field near the canal in Alameda County. He is believed to have died by suicide.

A Delta-Mendota Water Authority water technician, who gave his name only as Gary, said he found the body caught at a stop log bay, used to regulate flows and water levels in the canal, as he cleaned tumbleweeds from it. The discovery was initially reported as a rescue call, sheriff’s spokesman Royjindar Singh said. However, emergency medical crews quickly determined that the man was no longer alive.

“We just want to help reunite the body with the family,” Gary said.

The San Luis Delta-Mendota Water Authority, which oversees operation of Central Valley Project water facilities, including the canal, had learned about the car found near the canal. As a result, Gary said, he was told to be on the lookout for a body.

A sheriff’s dive team arrived at 3:45 p.m. and recovered the body at about 4:15 p.m.

Deputy sheriff’s coroner Katie Soto said it was unknown how long the man was underwater, but it looks as if he might have been there six days.

The man died from drowning, Singh said. He said the man’s family had said he was depressed when they last saw him.

Gary said bodies tend to turn up at least once a year in the canal, and he has found four people and a pair of legs there in the 23½ years he has worked for the water authority.

Automobiles, methamphetamine labs and other items also regularly show up in the water, he said.
