Local Catholics receive honors
Ed and Mimi Maring of Patterson are among six “Bright Light in the Catholic Community” honorees within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Stockton.

They will be honored at the fifth annual Bishop Awards Dinner at 6:30 p.m. today at Church of the Presentation, 6715 Leesburg Place, in Stockton. Tickets are $150 per person.

The Marings have supported Central Catholic High School in Modesto since its beginnings and helped build the school.

The Marings’ children attended Central Catholic, and the family also paid the tuition of other children whose parents could not afford it. The Marings later formalized that arrangement by setting up an endowed scholarship to which they still contribute.

Proceeds from Saturday’s dinner will go to Catholic Charities and SEEDS Growing Faith Through Student Scholarships. Catholic Charities works to support families, reduce poverty and build communities.

Manuel Mendes and Betty Scheuber of Sacred Heart Catholic Church were honored recently with the Benemerenti Award for outstanding Christian activity.

Mendes is a founding member of the Father Rose Council of the Knights of Columbus. He served on the Parish Advisory council for several terms.

Scheuber has served as manager of Patterson’s St. Vincent De Paul Thrift Store since it opened.
