Local residents need not worry if they see Patterson High School surrounded by dozens of police Sunday.
Special Weapons and Tactics teams from Merced, Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties will use the high school and the Crows Landing Air Facility as a training ground over the weekend.
Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Royjindar Singh said a gang brawl that broke out at the high school Sept. 19 inspired the sheriff’s department to consider Patterson for the training. However, it’s not in anticipation of any future problems there.
“We’re not expecting a standby or a shoot-off with kids,” Singh said. “It’s practice.”
The sheriff’s department picks different places for the training throughout the county each year. Past locations have included Hickman, Waterford, Empire and Enochs High School in Modesto.
The department asked Patterson Unified School District for permission to do the training at the high school this year, and it got the OK.
The training will start at 8 a.m. and should go until 5 p.m. at the high school and the former naval air base.
