No undefeated record is safe when opposing teams visit Patterson Community Stadium to face the resurgent Patterson Redskins varsity team. At least, not when the Redskins have a potent source of offense and defense in two-way starter Nickolous Ward. Ward caught two touchdown passes and registered a two-point safety on defense with a tackle in the end zone as Patterson shut out previously unbeaten Tri-City 14-0 on Saturday. “Ward is the man right now,” Patterson coach Rene Cabada said. “He’s playing good football. We moved him to middle linebacker, and he’s doing a really good job.” Patterson (6-2) scored on its first drive of the game when quarterback Ricardo Ramirez found Ward for an 8-yard touchdown on an out pass to the flat, giving the Redskins a 6-0 lead. Then Ward again came through when he tackled a Tri-City ball carrier in the end zone for an 8-0 lead. Ward later caught a second touchdown pass from Ramirez on the final play of the first half for a 14-0 halftime lead. Ramirez has now thrown five touchdowns in two games. Defensively, Patterson picked up its assignments and created an uphill battle all day for Tri-City’s offense. “I told the kids to stay focused and not to let anyone take them out of the game,” Cabada said. “The kids had a coaching staff that was motivated. I just told the kids to get their game plan going and hit hard. Once we stepped onto the field, Tri-City would know whose field it was.” In other Redskins highlights, Gabriel Gonzales caught a 25-yard pass for his first catch of the season, while Marcos Sanchez tackled a Tri-City ball carrier for a loss in the backfield. Junior varsity Patterson couldn’t catch a break from the officiating crew, and as a result, the Redskins couldn’t stop Tri-City from breaking a big run in the fourth quarter in a 7-6 loss. To no avail, JV coach Larry Olmos protested what appeared to be a clipping, an illegal block, against Patterson defensive back Scott Campbell. The officiating crew’s decision not to make that call whipped Olmos into such a frenzy that he was flagged for a penalty. “The referees beat us on that one,” Olmos said. “On the run that Tri-City scored, it was a blatant clip. I couldn’t blame the parents for getting mad. Campbell got clipped. Otherwise, he would have tackled their guy and saved the game.” Tanner Torres snapped a scoreless halftime tie when he bolted 25 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, giving the Redskins a 6-0 lead. But the lead was short-lived as Tri-City broke a huge run and wound up with the victory to improve to 3-4 on the season. “We should have beat them,” Olmos said. “We’ll just keep getting them technically sound. We got several passes off against Tri-City. We just couldn’t keep the momentum going. Our offensive line just broke down. We got to fight the whole game, not every other down.” Patterson fell to 2-6 with the loss. Novice Patterson’s novice squad sharpened its playoff prospects in a 36-0 shutout of Tri-City, improving to 7-1. Hunter Powers accounted for Patterson’s first two scores on touchdown runs of 65 and 6 yards in the first quarter, giving the Redskins a 12-0 lead. In the second quarter, Micheal Lawson broke free on a 46-yard pitch he took all the way to the end zone for an 18-0 Patterson lead. Daniel Cota put the game out of reach for Tri-City on a 49-yard punt return for a touchdown, followed by a 52-yard touchdown scamper. David Suarez put the finishing touches on Patterson’s shutout with an 11-yard touchdown sweep. Ruben Rosas Jr. blocked a punt and registered three unassisted tackles to punctuate the defensive effort, as did Victor Chavez, who had four unassisted tackles. Junior novice Patterson and Tri-City battled to an unofficial tie with two touchdowns each. John-John Guevarra scored in the first quarter on a 15-yard reverse. Tri-City countered with a second-quarter touchdown, and both squads traded scores in the second half. Patterson missed a golden opportunity when it fumbled near the goal line in the first quarter just as the Redskins were on the verge of scoring. Patterson travels to Modesto Christian on Saturday. Game times are 1 p.m. for junior novice, 3 p.m. for novice, 5 p.m. for JV and 7 p.m. for varsity.
