Input needed on apartment project

  • At this point, many residents have more questions than answers. Hopefully, those questions will be addressed at Tuesday's council meeting.

Local residents who showed up to last week’s City Council meeting on the future general plan may want to mark their calendars to show up to next week’s council meeting.

The Marrad Group plans to build 92 town homes and 62 apartments on more than 12 acres at Ward Avenue and Ninth Street.

The project could mean big changes for the surrounding area and certainly would have more immediate effects than the far-reaching general plan.

Neighbors have complained at past planning commission meetings about how the project could create more traffic and attract a bad crowd. The latter complaint reeks of NIMBYism, but traffic concerns may be another matter. Anyone who drives a child to various schools in the area knows Ward Avenue can become a traffic nightmare in the mornings.

City officials say the Marrad Group project actually would lead to traffic improvements. It would create a reason to install a new traffic signal at Ninth Street and Ward Avenue, with some of that money coming upfront from the Marrad Group, and would result in the intersection being realigned. In addition, a city staff report indicates that an interior road through the complex would help alleviate some worries about extra cars.

Still, it’s important to ask what will keep Patterson High School parents from using the complex’s interior private road when dropping off their children. In addition, one would hope traffic at the new signal would not back up substantially just before school starts.

At this point, many residents have more questions than answers. Hopefully, those questions will be addressed at Tuesday’s council meeting.

For those who are concerned about the city’s future — the future is now. Show up Tuesday and learn about what’s going on.
