Patterson girls cruise past Livingston in league showdown Two potential scenarios faced the Patterson High cross country boys and girls teams Wednesday before their meet with defending league champion Livingston. They could win, and gain the inside track toward a league title going into their final league meet, or lose, and face the prospect of a having league title slip away. In the end, Patterson’s girls team ran away with four of the top five places to cruise to victory at T.W. Patterson Sports Park, while the boys team faltered without two of its top runners. Amanda Moreno and Melissa Vega rekindled their back-and-forth, good-natured rivalry by taking turns in first place. Vega led at the start of the race before Moreno won the 3.1-mile race in 21 minutes, 52 seconds. Vega was second in 22:17. ![]() Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator Facing a fierce and blustery crosswind, Moreno couldn’t duplicate her 20:04 mark from Patterson’s Sept. 26 2.85-mile home meet against Central Catholic. Still, she preserved her energy for the home stretch. “I tried not to run too hard the first mile,” Moreno said. “It’s three miles, so I just wanted to keep myself for the whole race. I tried to pick it up at the end. Mr. Klein wanted Melissa and I to get under 22 minutes.” Samantha Kramer, younger sister of senior runner Kaelee Kramer, broke away from the middle of the pack to take third in 23:19. Adriana Araisa, a varsity soccer player, wasn’t far behind, in 23:28, to finish in fourth place. “We ran this course on Monday in practice,” Patterson coach Dave Klein said. “I thought we ran really well today.” While Livingston runners took fifth and sixth place, Patterson’s Linsey Moeller finished seventh in 25:02, and Kaelee Kramer crossed the finish line in 10th place with a time of 26:17. Vanessa Lazcano was 13th in 26:57. Patterson won overall, 17-39. On the boys side, the absence of soccer players Jose Cortez and Eduardo Chin, both top-five runners, cost Patterson significantly as Livingston had four of the top five runners cross the finish line. No Patterson runner could keep pace with Livingston frontrunner Nuno Estadinha’s time of 16:50. His mark beat second-place finisher Juan Segundo by more than a minute (18:12) and third-place runner, Patterson’s Jorge Vazquez (19:08), by more than two minutes. ![]() Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator Livingston’s Jose Arevalo (19:17) and Ben Ramirez (19:32) took fourth and fifth place, which Patterson had hoped to take in an effort to win the team scoring. “We talked about fourth and fifth place,” Klein said. “We needed to put more people in front of the guys. We had a feeling we’d give up the No. 1 and 2 spots without Jose and Eduardo. Now, the key is to beat Jim Elliot (Christian High School).” Among Patterson’s highlights was wrestler-turned-runner Lance Michael, whose unorthodox running style but unmistakable hustle propelled him to a sixth-place finish of 20:04. “I just started going as hard as I could,” Michael said of his run toward the finish line. “I had to go all the way. I wanted it. I’m kind of disappointed we lost, but I know the whole (boys) team gave their best effort.” After Michael, Manuel Salas finished in seventh place in 20:09, followed by Evan Bachelder’s eighth-place finish of 20:11, and James Dimter’s time of 20:33. Freshman Jack Relva fought off sickness long enough to finish 12th in 21:24. Omar Cortez was next in 21:32, followed by Eddie Heinrich (21:41) and Art Hoxie (21:52). Patterson travels to face Jim Elliot Christian of Lodi on Wednesday in the lead-up to the Western Athletic Conference meet Oct. 23 in Modesto.
