The Patterson High girls golf team has come a long way on its Diablo Grande home course in just a little more than two months’ time. From its season-opening total of 246 against Central Valley in August to a round of less than 200 to wrap up the regular season, the Tigers are peaking at just the right time. With the league meet just days away, Patterson shot its two best rounds of the season in a sizable win over Livingston and a one-stroke loss to Hughson Tuesday and Thursday at Diablo Grande. “We’re playing great golf,” Patterson coach Jason Oliveira said. “We have attained our goal to this point, which is to be playing our best golf late in the year. The girls have done everything I’ve asked of them. They’re getting better on a day-to-day basis.” Patterson came within a stroke of tying Hughson, a team that defeated the Tigers Sept. 13 at River Oaks Golf Course in Ceres, in a 201-202 loss. ![]() Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator “Borba’s round of 46 was big,” Oliveira said. “That’s what brought the match closer.” Patterson didn’t have nearly as much of a challenge Thursday when it defeated Livingston 193-246, led by Hansen’s season-best round of 45. Borba was next with a round of 48, Conte shot 49, and Sam Leslie and Young tied for fourth with rounds of 51 each. “Jessica felt really bad after the Hughson loss,” Oliveira said. “That’s the kind of competitor she is. She really responded. Everyone on the Patterson team missed shots against Hughson that day, and they all had shots they would have liked to have back.” Patterson travels to Central Catholic’s home course, Dryden Golf Course in Modesto, to finish the regular season in the Valley Foothill League. Instead of just nine holes, the Tigers will be tested at an 18-hole all-day event. “We’re definitely looking forward to it,” Oliveira said. “We’re primed to get there. We still have 18 holes to play. “I hope what we’ve done to this point has prepared us for Monday and to give it a good run.” The top three teams among the eight VFL teams, along with the top four individual scorers, advance to the Sub-section Division V Tournament Oct. 22 at Diablo Grande. That’s where Patterson’s familiarity with its home course becomes an advantage. “I would love nothing more than to take our top four girls and play at sub-sections,” Oliveira said. “Today, we could have beat anyone with our 193 score. I’m very optimistic about our chances Monday.”
