Livingston snaps Patterson's 15-game win streak Print E-mail

Patterson’s streak of invincibility came to an abrupt halt Monday in the Tigers’ biggest game of the season to date.

Livingston put an end to Patterson’s 15-consecutive-win run with a pair of second half goals to upend the Tigers 2-0 at home, saddling Patterson with its first loss of the season in league.

“We just played terrible,” Patterson coach Greg Hartsell said. “We seemed to have a problem playing on shorter fields. Their goalie was kicking the ball from box to box. That’s how short the field was. We couldn’t do it there.”

Patterson (16-3, 8-1) and Livingston battled to a scoreless halftime tie until Livingston scored on a rebound off goalie Edgar Martinez, who started in place of Luis Torres. A defensive miscue led to Livingston’s second goal.

“Edgar played pretty well,” Hartsell said. “Their first goal was kind of a rebound. Edgar mishandled it, and Livingston followed it and put it in the back of the net. On the second goal, our defense fell asleep and left somebody wide open in the goal box.”

Livingston’s midfielders, a strength of the Wolves, prevented Patterson from assembling much offense. They kept the Tigers’ leading goal scorer Sergio Hinojosa (21 goals) from scoring, as the Tigers struggled to develop rhythm.

“It seems like every year, Livingston has a really strong midfield,” Hartsell said. “That’s what really happened. We couldn’t get anything going. They were a really tough, tough team.”

Though the loss left the Tigers with their first loss in league, Hinojosa said he found a silver lining in the defeat. Livingston must still travel to Patterson Community Stadium for two more games.

“I’m thinking it was better to lose over there than to have lost our first game at home here,” said Hinojosa, a bulky forward and physical presence on Patterson’s frontline. “We’re just waiting for that game to beat Livingston and take it all.”

Hartsell said the Tigers learned a valuable lesson about suiting up not just physically for each game, but also mentally.

“Maybe it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing that we lost,” Hartsell said. “At least we know we can be beat, so we got to be prepared to play every game. I think the loss ignited the guys. A lot of guys really didn’t think we should have lost that game.”

After two shutout losses to start the season, the Tigers previously had combined a prolific offense with 61 goals and a stringent defense.

In that vein, Patterson rallied Wednesday in a 5-1 road win over Hilmar, the defending Div. IV section champion. Hinojosa scored two goals, and his assist to Michael Laines accounted for Patterson’s first score of the game. James Santana and Noe Flores also scored.

Patterson overcame the loss of its second leading goal scorer, Rodrigo Aldana, who didn’t play because of academic ineligibility.

“Since Rodrigo is out, I made a little bit of adjustment,” Hartsell said. “It was nice to see us bounce back and play as well as we did. For a lot of these seniors, it’s their last time going over to Hilmar. I’m sure that’s a good memory for them.”

Patterson’s junior varsity remained unbeaten in league with a 3-1 win over Livingston and a 2-0 shutout of Hilmar.

Cesar Molina scored twice, and Jose Cuevas also scored in Patterson’s victory over Livingston. Molina also had a goal, as did leading goal scorer Leopoldo Rangel, in the win over Hilmar. Patterson improved to 9-0 in league, 12-1-2 overall.

“They keep getting better and better at passing,” Patterson JV coach Alfredo Virgen said. “They’re getting to know each other better. We got a little bit of speed, too.”

Patterson hosts Orestimba Monday at 7 p.m., followed by a road game at Central Catholic Wednesday at 4 p.m.
