Service game sinks Patterson Print E-mail

As their serving goes, so goes the Patterson High volleyball team. In the Tigers’ latest test, Patterson demonstrated that there’s still plenty of work to be done.

The Tigers relinquished 21 points in two matches on faulty serving, contributing to a pair of three-game defeats against Livingston and Hilmar Tuesday and Thursday.

“Missing serves is one of our biggest downfalls right now,” Patterson coach Jennifer Hamm said. “It’s still the same thing — we got to stop missing serves and giving points away. You can’t give that many points away.”

Patterson (2-8 WAC, 9-15 overall) stuck with Livingston for two games, 25-21 and 25-20, before letting Game 3 slip away quickly in a 25-8 defeat.

Jill Goubert led the Tigers in serving with three aces. Goubert teamed up with Shelby Yamamoto to finish five kills apiece. Yamamoto helped to stymie Livingston at the net with four blocks, and setter Chelsea Taylor set up her teammates with nine assists.

“Shelby and Jill were hitting the ball really well,” Hamm said. “We stayed in there. Things like passing on the net caught up with us. In the third game, we just gave it away. We got ourselves in a hole and we couldn’t get ourselves out.”

Patterson picked up the intensity Thursday against Hilmar, hanging with the Yellowjackets for three games in a closely fought loss, 25-14, 25-20, 25-18.

“We picked it up a little bit tonight and turned it up a notch,” Hamm said. “We just played a lot better tonight. We just came out with a little bit more focus.”

Patterson’s serves into the net proved costly as Hilmar picked up 10 points over a three-game set, while Patterson conceded 11 points to Livingston.

“You’re talking 21 points,” Hamm said. “That’s a whole game.”

Goubert led Patterson with two aces. A new leader, Rebecca Freres, emerged on offense with five kills. Goubert and Yamamoto contributed along the net with three blocks apiece. Taylor had 11 assists, and Stacey Garibaldi amassed nine digs.

Patterson returns to action Monday when it hosts Orestimba at 7 p.m., followed by Central Catholic Thursday on the road at 7 p.m.
