“We are doing OK — I want all my servers and people in the kitchen to be sharp.”
— Igor De Los Reyes
Manager, El Rosal Restaurant
Local residents and freeway passersby alike have a few new dining options these days.
A few new restaurants have opened recently close to Interstate 5 — two near I-5’s Patterson exit and the other near the freeway’s Westley exit.
Strings Italian Restaurant had its grand opening near the Patterson exit at 2985 Renzo Lane last week. More to come on the Italian eatery in a future column.
Meanwhile, El Rosal Restaurant opened next door to Strings six weeks ago, serving up breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Igor De Los Reyes of Turlock manages the Mexican restaurant, which is owned by Maria Martinez and Marcos Solis, who also own the El Rosal in Turlock.
De Los Reyes invites diners to stop by and try the food.
“We have a full bar, and I believe the food is good,” De Los Reyes said. “We were looking for a year trying to find a location — we found the right spot and we decided to open one in Patterson.”
El Rosal serves breakfast fare, such as huevos rancheros, from 9 to 11 a.m. Lunch specials feature salads as well as sandwiches. El Rosal has 52 dinner selections that include chicken, beef, chile rellenos and vegetarian dishes, including the veggie burrito supreme.
A dinner buffet is available Saturday and Sunday nights. Other weekend specials include menudo — a soup of tender tripe with hominy, served with onion, lime, oregano, chiles and tortillas.
De Los Reyes said El Rosal’s 25 employees are ready to serve customers.
“We are doing OK — I want all my servers and people in the kitchen to be sharp,” De Los Reyes said.
El Rosal is open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
Perko’s Cafe opens
At 5 a.m,. when many people are still in bed, Marco Sanchez opens the doors at Perko’s Café and Grill on Howard Road near the Westley I-5 exit.
Perko’s, which has been open for three weeks, is owned by Taquit Abid of Los Banos, who also owns the Perko’s restaurant in that city.
Sanchez worked in the Los Banos restaurant. When it came time to open in Westley, Abid made him the general manager.
“We’re starting to get busier and busier every day,” Sanchez said. “A lot of people didn’t know we were open.”
Perko’s offers all kinds of food, from omelets to burgers and chicken sandwiches. Dinner selections include chicken, seafood, steaks, ribs, soups and salads. And don’t forget the desserts.
Sanchez moved to Patterson so he can more easily manage the restaurant and said he finds it a nice, quiet town. He added that the eatery’s location, next to Joe’s Travel Plaza, is good for the restaurant.
“We know Patterson is growing quite a lot,” Sanchez said.
Perko’s aims to extend employment to local schools, so students can fill out the café’s staff of 40, he said.
“We’re trying to get Patterson High School students to work part-time here,” Sanchez said.
Perko’s, 4415 Howard Road, in Westley, is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 5 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.
