“For me, I’ve known for over two months. The hardest part was keeping my mouth shut.”

While many game show champions typically use their winnings to place a new boat or car in the garage, recent “Deal or No Deal” winner Rev. Cecil Richardson plans to use his earnings to benefit his church.
The local pastor won $310,000 after appearing on the NBC television show that aired Friday night.

“Our plans are to expand our ministry,” Richardson said Monday.

Richardson, pastor of Lighthouse Light of the World Christian Ministries, started the local church in January with just two members — his wife, Linda, and himself. Over the past 10 months, the church, which meets at Best Western Villa Del Lago Inn in western Patterson, has grown to more than 100 people.

Richardson ended up getting on the show after going on the Internet to play the Deal or No Deal Suitcase Game. He noticed there was a casting call the next day and traveled to Los Angeles to stand and wait with 7,000 other people.

That was 10 months ago. He taped the show two months ago, taking along his wife, Linda, three of his children and a grandchild.

Richardson was given a choice of one of  26 suitcases during the show. He chose suitcase No. 9 for his first pick. Then, he continued to choose numbered cases to eliminate cases he thought had the lowest amount of money in them.

In the end, Richardson had to choose between keeping his original No. 9 or swapping it for a remaining unopened case that might have the top $1 million prize.

“I was down to three suitcases, No. 9, No. 5 and No. 16,” Richardson said.

Before opening the No. 9 suitcase, a banker — who the audience and television viewers cannot see — called game-show host Howie Mandel, who offered Richardson $310,000 to buy the suitcase back.

Richardson hit the “deal” button and sold the No. 9 suitcase back to the show for the money.

“I had a dream, and in the dream, I saw suitcase No. 16, and I had an offer of  $457,000,”  Richardson said.

The last remaining case, No. 16 — revealed at the end of Richardson’s time on stage — contained $1 million.

Richardson said he plans to use some of his award money to open an administrative office in Patterson on Baldwin Road. He also wants to move church services to Apricot Valley Elementary School by the first Sunday in November.

As of Monday, the pastor wasn’t sure just how much of the $310,000 he would get after taxes.

He has the patience to wait, though, as the hardest part of the ordeal — keeping his win a secret — already has past.

“For me, I’ve known for over two months,” Richardson said of his win. “The hardest part was keeping my mouth shut.”
