Patterson’s planning commission will discuss building a new well during its regular meeting Thursday. The city previously discussed the well at its Sept. 27 meeting, but commissioners decided to hold off on making a decision on whether to build it.

City public works officials say the well, which would stand about 2,000 feet west of Sycamore Avenue and 1,400 feet south of Orange Avenue, would not adversely affect the environment. Several people who live near the proposed well site have expressed concerns that the well would affect the water quality in their rural wells.

Public works officials say it would draw from lower tiers of underground water, starting at about 330 feet below ground and ending about 480 feet. The well would have a turbine pump housed in a masonry building. The 20-foot-by-30-foot pump house would sit on an acre of land and have a half-acre access way. The project would require piping, an electrical transformer, back-up power, site fencing and access.

The pump station would be connected to the distribution system through a 1,400-foot-long,
14-inch-wide water line along the access way to a transmission line on Orange Avenue.

City staff is considering the new well just a few months after the city lost a well this summer, following the discovery that nitrates in its water exceeded the allowable limit for state and federal drinking water standards. The city’s water production decreased by 13 percent as a result. A new well was placed into operation in July 2007, providing sufficient water to meet summer demands.

The city now has six operational wells. However, city officials say it is critical that another well be online to provide water for approved developments.
