JV finds way back to the win column Print E-mail

A return to fundamentals and better ball handling meant a return to the winning column for the Patterson High junior varsity football team.

Anthony Sanchez’s touchdown in the fourth quarter erased a three-point second half deficit, lifting Patterson to a 16-12 victory over Calaveras Friday night.

Patterson (2-2-1) wasn’t entirely error-free, but the Tigers eliminated many of the costly mistakes that led to a 19-6 defeat against Summerville Sept. 28.

“We went back to fundamentals, and we took care of the ball,” Patterson JV coach Steve Cardoso said. “We executed tremendously, and we got the job done. It was a total team effort.”

Patterson quarterback Wyatt Young got the Tigers on the board in the first quarter during his 20-yard touchdown scamper from the triple-threat option.

“Wyatt made the right read and took it to the house,” Cardoso said.

Calaveras converted a Patterson fumble into a touchdown to tie the game, 6-6, but Cesar Molina’s 27-yard field goal gave the Tigers a 9-6 lead going into halftime.

While Calaveras scored on an 8-yard touchdown slant in the third quarter to go up 12-9, their hopes of keeping the Tigers down and out were short-lived.

Down the stretch, a Patterson clipping penalty negated a 70-yard touchdown run by Sanchez. Undeterred, the Tigers marched down the field and completed the comeback on a draw to Sanchez, who burst in from 20 yards for the win.

Young amassed 124 passing yards, while at least four running backs each accounted for 20 or more rushing yards. Moses Menchaca led the Tigers with 60 rushing yards, followed by Sanchez (48), Young (24), and Ramone Ellington (21).

“We had two turnovers, but Calaveras did as well,” Cardoso said. “To beat a team like Calaveras is a big win for us. If we can control the ball and not cough it up, it makes a big difference.”
