School administrators believe a bomb threat made to Patterson High School on Tuesday was a prank, but they still had police search the local campus.
The high school received a phone call at about 10 a.m., and the caller said there was a bomb at the campus.
Patterson Unified School District Superintendent Patrick Sweeney said he did not want to go into too many details about the call itself, but there was laughing in the background and it did not seem like a credible threat.
“We think this may be the result of recent student discipline,” said district administrators in a phone message sent to principals and to parents of PHS students Tuesday.
Patterson Police Services deputies searched outside the campus, and high school staff searched through the classrooms. Meanwhile, classes resumed as normal and students were not placed on lockdown.
Despite the suspicion that the phone call was a prank, Sweeney said the district wanted to take precautions in light of recent events on campus.
A gang brawl instigated by about 15 students broke out during the students’ nutrition break Sept. 19, and police had to break up the melee. A girl on campus was rumored to have a gun at the time, and the whole campus was placed on lockdown, though a gun was never found.
The high school continued on its normal schedule Tuesday as searches were ongoing.
“Everyone handled it great,” Sweeney said.
