“We made some adjustments from the last game. Our defense looked good, and we spread out our offense.” — Rene Cabada Redskins varsity head coach Just a week after the Modesto Patriots humbled the varsity Patterson Redskins in a 24-0 shutout, Rene Cabada had his work cut out for him. Heeding Cabada’s strategic changes, the Redskins made significant improvements on both sides of the ball with a 34-0 shutout in youth football action. “We made some adjustment from the last game,” Cabada said. “Our defense looked good, and we spread out our offense.” Patterson (5-2) scored on its first two drives, capped with a 60-yard touchdown from Nickolous Ward and a 1-yard touchdown from quarterback Ricardo Ramirez, to go up 14-0. Ripon struggled to find any offensive rhythm against a Patterson defense that switched Ward to middle linebacker. The Redskins forced three fumbles and never allowed the Chiefs to establish a ground game. “Everyone was attacking the ball and flying to it,” Cabada said of his defense. Buoyed by its defense, Patterson got creative on offense when running back Robert Marroquin trotted into the end zone on a 27-yard reverse. Later in the second quarter, Ward caught a 16-yard pass from Ramirez for a 28-0 lead, which Patterson held going into halftime. In the fourth quarter, Frankie Sanchez received a short out pass from Ramirez and rumbled into the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown to cap the scoring at 34-0. “We just focused on trying to get our offense out of the box with the slant passes,” Cabada said. “Our offensive line did a really good job making blocks. It gave our quarterback time to pass, which is big. Ramirez threw some nice passes.” Robert Montalvo complemented the defensive effort with a blocked punt. Patterson has three more conference games before the playoffs begin Nov. 3. “It’s a pretty tight race getting into the playoffs, so this win was big,” Cabada said. “Our first-year players like Montalvo have started stepping up. They’re getting the idea of what to do.” Junior varsity Junior varsity coach Larry Olmos could not be reached this week to provide the JV score. Novice Patterson built a 13-0 lead on touchdown runs from Hunter Powers and Micheal Lawson in the first quarter and held on for a 13-6 win over Ripon. Despite three Patterson fumbles, the Redskins’ defense filled in for an offense that scored early but struggled to take care of the ball. “Our defense did a really good job,” Patterson novice coach Read Weinzheimer said. “They pretty much kept us in the game all the way around.” Powers scored on a 30-yard counter and Lawson had a 1-yard touchdown plunge for a 13-0 halftime lead. Ripon scored midway through the third quarter following a Patterson fumble, but the Redskins held off Ripon the rest of the game. “With three games to go, we’ll have to play better than that to get to the Super Bowl,” Weinzheimer said. Junior novice The Patterson Redskins junior novice squad scored three touchdowns to Ripon’s two touchdowns to come away with an unofficial win — as the junior novice division plays on a noncompetitive basis. Jamie Jimenez scored the first of Patterson’s three touchdowns on a 40-yard sweep, followed by John-John Guevarra’s 30-yard reverse for a score. “Our defense was very dominant,” junior novice coach John Guevarra said. “Although it was a little bit slow at the beginning of the game, we held them to two touchdowns. We were very dominant the remainder of the second half.” Samuel Garcia’s 2-yard plunge in the second half put Patterson over the top. Patterson hosts Homecoming festivities Saturday against Tri-City. The action gets under way with the junior novice game at 10 a.m., and concludes at 4 p.m. with the varsity contest.
