“I just got lucky. I won a couple years ago. I’ve done pretty well.”
— Brenda Silveira
Week 5 winner

A quick glimpse of the headlines surrounding the undefeated Patterson High football team, coupled with a bit of luck, paid off for Patterson resident Brenda Silveira this weekend.

Silveira picked the score of Patterson’s comeback victory over Calaveras on Friday, 34-27, to win the tiebreaker contest in Week 5 of the Irrigator’s Football Contest.

“We’ve been playing the football pool on and off for a number of years,” she said of her family. “I was looking at the football pool, and I took a wild guess. I just noticed in the headlines that (Patterson has) been doing well. It was just a stab in the dark. That score just came to me.”

Silveira lives in Patterson with her husband, Timothy, and two children. It’s a place she’s called home for 14 years.

“I just got lucky,” Silveira said. “I won a couple years ago. I’ve done pretty well.”

Silveira picked up a gift basket from Patterson Family Pharmacy for her correct guess.

Walter Luiz picked seven of eight NFL games correctly and nine of the 14 college games during an upset-laden week to win $20.

One other contestant also had 16 correct picks to tie Luiz, but Luiz broke the tie by his closer guess of 38-13 in Patterson’s win over Calaveras.

The contestant who makes the most correct picks throughout the contest will receive a $25 gift certificate good at the business of the contest sponsor of the winner’s choice.

Through Week 4, Patterson residents Dick Day and Bill Garner were tied with 71 points for the most correct picks.

Because no one has yet picked all 22 winners in any contest, the weekly grand prize for Week 6 increases to $600. Entries are due at the Patterson Irrigator, 26 N. Third St., by 5 p.m. Friday, or postmarked by 5 p.m.
