Patterson High School’s Kids Helping Kids group wants to help youngsters during the holiday season. The students formed the group to volunteer to do something positive in their town after last month’s gang brawl on the local campus. ![]() Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator So far, the group has raised $575. Kids Helping Kids member Sandra Gaytan, 17, said she joined because she thought many people would need help. “Not all people have Christmas presents,” Gaytan said. “We can make a change in their lives.” Her friend, Delia Felix, 16, is also helping out. “I thought it would be interesting helping little kids in need,” Delia said. Josh Ham, also 16, said he wanted to be a part of it after teacher Peterson announced the plan. It will be his graduation prep project. “It’s a chance for me to help kids less fortunate,” Ham said. Students working on the plan as part of a prep project must put in more than 15 hours of work and record and write their experiences. Completing a prep project is required for PHS seniors to graduate. Students present the results of their work to a panel at the end of the school year. At the Oct. 3 meeting, committees were set up to raise funds through a penny drive, through recycling and by asking local businesses and individuals for donations. Solorio-Brandt will help students set up a toy program at Tri-Counties Bank and U.S. Bank in Patterson. Kids Helping Kids will have specific information about requested Christmas toys at each bank. Those who take a child’s information card will be given instructions on where to return the toy they buy for that child. A person dressed as Santa Claus will distribute toys at the party. Local resident Laura Guido will help students send letters to businesses asking for donations. Students will consult with teachers and put collected money placed in 1-gallon jars in classrooms. Students at other schools in the district who wish to participate may also donate their change. Recycling bins will be put out at PHS, and recyclables will be collected and turned in for money regularly. When the project is complete, Kids Helping Kids will give presentations to local clubs that have donated money. Kids Helping Kids will continue to raise funds throughout the school year and leave start-up funds for next year’s holiday project.
