Patterson High setter Chelsea Taylor hasn’t forgotten about her team’s surprising loss to Gustine on Sept. 18.

Neither did the rest of her teammates.

The Tigers used a strong start and solid serving to upend the Redskins in three games Thursday at home to ease the sting of Gustine’s previous league victory.

“Absolutely, the loss was fresh in my mind,” said Taylor, who led the Tigers with eight assists and five aces. “It was kind of a dagger to the heart to lose to them because we really underestimated them. We wanted to prove to ourselves that we wanted to win.”

Patterson (9-13 overall, 2-6 Western Athletic Conference) shook off a tough four-game loss to Central earlier in the week by defeating Gustine convincingly, 25-17, 25-21, 25-16.

“This was a big win for us,” Patterson coach Jennifer Hamm said. “I was very pleased with how we won. They did a fantastic job. We started off strong and continued strong.”

Jill Goubert (five blocks) finished off Game one with a kill, complementing the strong net play of Shelby Yamamoto (a team-high six kills).

Gustine fought off a slow start in Game two to tie Patterson at 20-20. But Becca Hinojosa’s cross-court kill to the back left corner, coupled with another kill from Goubert on an errant Gustine dig, helped propel Patterson to a 25-21 Game three win.

Patterson held significant leads in Game three thanks to solid net play from Yamamoto, Goubert and Rebecca Freres. Points from Goubert and Taylor were key down the stretch.

“We’ve been saying for one third of the (league) season that we’re a good team with great potential,” Taylor said. “You could say it was a must-win game.”

Stacey Garibaldi solidified her back-row strength with seven digs, and teammate Cecilia Ou shored up Patterson’s defense with six digs.

Patterson’s junior varsity dropped a tough three-game match to Gustine, 25-19, 23-25, 11-15. They took the first game against Central Tuesday, 25-18, before dropping Games 2 and 3 25-22, 16-14.

Patterson looks to sustain its win streak at the weekend Golden Valley Tournament in Merced today. It returns to league Tuesday in a road match at Livingston.
