“After the Orestimba game, we had a long talk that next practice. We said that we were going to treat every game like a playoff game. We really tried to make sure that we did not take anybody lightly.” - Patterson coach Greg Hartsell ![]() Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator But Patterson wasn’t taking any chances following its lackadaisical play in what should have been a routine win against Orestimba on Sept. 26. Mindful of its need to score early and often, Patterson disposed of Central Catholic and Gustine in handy fashion Monday and Wednesday, respectively, with 6-0 and 8-0 shutouts to push the win streak to 15 games. “After the Orestimba game, we had a long talk that next practice,” Patterson coach Greg Hartsell said. “We said that we were going to treat every game like a playoff game. We really tried to make sure that we did not take anybody lightly.” Unlike the 2-0 win over Orestimba, which illustrated Patterson’s inability to assemble much offense or passing, the Tigers took it to Central right away. Patterson went to its bread-and-butter up top, including leading goal scorer Sergio Hinojosa and deft dribbler Eduard Chin. The duo accounted for four goals, two apiece, as the Tigers rolled to the 6-0 win. ![]() Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator Noe Flores scored once and dished out two assists, and Avelino Valdavinos accounted for Patterson’s other goal to complete the shutout against Central Catholic. Patterson showed few signs of letting up against Gustine with six goals in the first half against Redskins goalie Jorge Medina. Roughly eight minutes into the game, Rafael Alcauter scored Patterson’s first goal when he snagged a Sergio Hinojosa shot on goal that bounced off Medina’s hands. Alcauter dribbled briefly before directing his shot over Medina’s head. Four minutes later, Eduardo Chin’s corner kick bounced surprisingly untouched through the goalie box past the Gustine defense. Awaiting the fortuitous bounce was Hererra, who found the right corner of the goal for a 2-0 lead, and the rout was on. Gustine hardly had a chance to regain its composure when Gerardo Cortez found a streaking Flores for Patterson’s third goal, followed by James Santana’s goal to make it 4-0. Flores added a second goal in the second half. “Coach told us in the beginning that he didn’t want to experience the Newman (Orestimba) game again,” Flores said. “Our goal was to score many goals and get us ready for Livingston. We had really good passes, and everyone was finishing their shots.” ![]() Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator “We were able to get everyone into the game,” Hartsell said. “We’re passing the ball well and using the whole field. I was really happy with tonight’s performance. Only two teams from the (Western Athletic Conference) will make the playoffs, so any hiccup could cost us a chance.” With the wins, Patterson (15-2, 6-0 WAC) advances to Monday’s 7 p.m. showdown at home against Livingston, which is also unbeaten in league play. Leopoldo Rangel and Sammy Gomez each scored once in the junior varsity’s 2-1 win over Gustine. With the goal, Rangel continues to lead the JV team in scoring with 13 goals.
