“Jessica, Molly and Brooke played steady. They definitely weren’t shell shocked about playing Central at our place. I was pleased for the most part. I still would have liked to shoot a little better. Our goal across the board is no three-putts.”
- Patterson High girls golf coach Jason Oliveira
Unseating undefeated Central Catholic wasn’t necessarily one of Patterson High girls golf coach Jason Oliveira’s goals going into Tuesday’s match.
Still, his squad gave the Valley Foothill League’s top team a good challenge before settling for a 196-215 defeat Tuesday at Dryden Golf Course in Modesto.
“This was a good test for us, especially playing the back nine holes at Dryden,” Oliveira said. “That’s where the league match will be. It’s a whole lot different than our home course at Diablo Grande. The girls persevered.”
Jessica Hansen led Patterson with a round of 50, followed by Brooke Borba’s 52, Molly Conte’s tally of 52 and Kendra Young’s 59.
Central had three golfers shoot 50 or lower, including Holly Wilcox and Brittany Storer, who tied with 47s. Storer shot a hole-in-one on the 17th hole. Kirsten Kim shot a 50, and Jianna Pecchenino carded a 52.
“Jessica, Molly and Brooke played steady,” Oliveira said. “They definitely weren’t shell shocked about playing Central at our place. I was pleased for the most part. I still would have liked to shoot a little better. Our goal across the board is no three-putts.”
Patterson faced a less formidable but equally important match Thursday against Gustine at home. The match counted double since an earlier league match had to be rescheduled to Thursday.
Led by rounds of 47 apiece by Hansen and Borba, the Tigers cruised to a 202-284 victory over Gustine. Molly Conte shot 49, while Sam Leslie, filling in for Kendra Young, finished with a 59.
Hansen overcame a busted driver on the third hole to finish tied for Borba.
“She snapped her driver and had to play the remaining six holes without her driver,” Oliveira said. “She made do with a hybrid club. She gave up some distance. She was striking the ball very well today. She’ll have to get acquainted with my driver.”
Borba showcased her incremental progress over the past few weeks by tying Hansen. Oliveira said much of her hot shooting is linked to her enhanced short game.
“She’s been Miss Consistent between 47 and 50,” he said. “She’s been chipping the ball very well and leaving a lot of 6-footers and 7-footers. She’s really coming around at the right time for us.”
Patterson faces Hughson, the second-place team in the VFL, Tuesday at Diablo Grande followed by Livingston at home Thursday to wrap up the regular season. A win against Hughson would elevate Patterson to third place.
“We want to do well and have a good showing going into the league tournament Oct. 15,” Oliveira said. “That would put us in a very good position going into league.”
