“We marched up and down the field at will.”
- Patterson freshman coach Kenny Durham
SAN ANDREAS — With at least 350 yards of total offense, moving the ball up and down the field against the Calaveras defense wasn’t a problem for the Patterson High freshman football team.
Giving away the ball was the problem, as Calaveras converted three Patterson turnovers into three touchdowns, proving to be the difference in a 38-25 win Thursday.
“Calaveras scored on all three of our turnovers,” Patterson freshman coach Kenny Durham said. “That was huge, and it really hurt us.”
The first Patterson turnover cost the Tigers immediately when Calaveras returned a fumble 40 yards for an 8-0 lead.
Patterson (2-2 overall) responded when Jimmy Guerrero capped a scoring drive with a 6-yard touchdown to cut Calaveras’ lead to 8-6. Calaveras added a second touchdown in the first quarter to establish a 16-6 lead.
On the kickoff after Calaveras’ second touchdown, Patterson fumbled in the end zone. The Redskins recovered to lead 24-6.
Efrim Jones scored the first of his two touchdowns when his 10-yard touchdown gave Patterson renewed hope, cutting the Tigers’ deficit to 24-13.
Calaveras and Patterson traded touchdowns shortly before the half, with Tigers quarterback Cody Weinzheimer connecting with Jones for a 62-yard touchdown score. Still, Patterson trailed 30-19 at the half.
Patterson came within one touchdown of tying the game when Weinzheimer’s 4-yard score made it 30-25 in the third quarter. Calaveras, however, sealed the game with a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
“We marched up and down the field at will,” Durham said. “We just had a turnover at the wrong moment. Calaveras ran the counter play up the gut, and we couldn’t stop it. They didn’t do anything fancy. For some reason, we couldn’t stop that play.”
