A new grant is the first step in the West Side Community Alliance’s most recent effort to better establish itself in the community.
Though it has been around for more than a decade, people often are uncertain about what the agency does. Even figuring out how to contact the group can be difficult. West Side Community Alliance has no phone book entry; folks must instead call the Center for Human Services, the group’s parent agency, to get in touch. Officials hope to clear up the confusion with the help of a recently awarded $250,000 federal grant. The grant, which paid for a recent safety study, will help the alliance become an independent nonprofit and remove it from the umbrella of Modesto-based Center for Human Services. The alliance plans to draft a new mission statement and form a board of directors. The group also will stage a volunteer drive. Then, the agency will focus on what it does best. “We connect to the community to different agencies, programs and services,” said director Dejeune Shelton. Shelton envisions the alliance as the West Side’s social service hub, where people can go to get connected to a broad array of available services. In fact, many people already do just that; Shelton hopes to use the grant to increase residents’ awareness of the organization. The grant is being implemented for the first time this year. The alliance will receive three annual payments of $250,000. Most of that will go toward staffing, Shelton said.
