“I’ve been wanting to do this all my life. I know a lot of people at Louisville. They’ve said I definitely have a chance there.” - Bethany Jackson, PHS Cheerleader ![]() Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator Years of dedication and perseverance will reach a crescendo later this week for the 17-year-old, as she responds to an invitation to work with the University of Louisville cheer squad in Kentucky. Jackson, the daughter of Michael and Ramona Jackson of Patterson, will train with the University of Louisville cheer squad Thursday through Monday, attend a home game with the team and work with the Louisville-based All-Star Gymtime program. “I hope to look at the college, of course, because that’s where I want to go,” Jackson said. “I want to see how I contribute on the team, and I hope to work well with others and get recognized by the coach. I want to be able to succeed and explore my horizons.” Jackson earned the invitation based on her skill level, which was forged through years of national championship experience and exposure. She hopes to come away from the trip with many things, including a highly sought-after scholarship. “I’ve been wanting to do this all my life,” Jackson said. “I know a lot of people at Louisville. They’ve said I definitely have a chance there.” Both the University of Louisville and Gymtime have reputations that precede them in the cheerleading circuit. Gymtime is the world champion in its division and has won at least 25 national titles to date. The University of Louisville showcases one of the premier cheer programs in the nation based on its Division I title for 12 straight years. ![]() Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator Jackson hails from a cheerleading family. Older sister Brittainy, a 2004 Patterson High graduate, both performed and coached cheerleading, and mother Ramona was a high school cheerleader. “Brittainy was always there to inspire me and help me,” Jackson said. “When she graduated, she taught a younger team.” Her mother continues to be a huge source of support and encouragement, she said. Wherever she has gone, she’s found her familiar face backing her every move. “My mom has been around cheerleading that long,” she said. “She’s really into it. She drives me to every practice and goes to all my competitions. It’s a big deal that your parents are involved because of the activities going on. She’s a big part of it.” Jackson was a captain of the Patterson High cheerleading squad her junior year. Earlier this year, she competed with Power Cheer at the All-Star Cheerleading World Championships in Orlando. She competed in the Miss Patterson pageant earlier this year and helps instruct Patterson Redskins JV cheerleaders alongside coach Kim Garro. She has taken Advancement Via Individual Determination classes at Patterson High and hopes to study dental hygiene at the University of Louisville.
