Movie nights, sophisticated graffiti removal equipment and the results of a police forum are up for review at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
The council will consider spending about $30,000 to bring more activities to Patterson High School after hours. The Parks and Recreation Department has proposed opening Patterson Community Stadium on Tuesday and Thursday nights to let people play soccer, flag football and volleyball. They’ll also consider screening movies in the high school auditorium. Each program is estimated to cost about $15,000.
The council will also consider purchasing a $77,500 graffiti abatement vehicle that would be equipped with a power washer and paint mixer. In addition to the new equipment, a new employee would be dedicated to the quick removal of graffiti from any property in the city for no charge to property owners.
The new position would cost about $47,000 annually.
The results of a police forum will also be discussed at Tuesday’s meeting. The Sept. 13 forum had been organized after several people took stories about police harassment to the council.
Based on the issues raised at the forum, city staff created a list of possible programs to address people’s concerns. Staff suggests having police complaint forms available at the teen center and online so people don’t have to go to the police station to fill out a complaint form.
Other suggestions included having a bicycle cop patrolling when school is getting in or out. The report suggests that the deputy could give rewards — such as coupons for ice cream — to children who are “obeying the rules and showing respectful behavior.”
In other council matters
The council will consider starting the paperwork to get the city’s enterprise zone expanded. Businesses in the enterprise zone can be given tax breaks. The expansions could occur in some downtown areas and on North First Street.
