NEWMAN — Facing a team they shut out 9-0 just three weeks before, the Patterson High boys soccer team expected a similar outcome in its second match with rival Orestimba on Wednesday.

Instead of sweeping past the Warriors, the Tigers’ offense struggled until scoring two goals in the game’s final 15 minutes for a 2-0 Western Athletic Conference victory.

Mindful of the team’s goal to take the league and the section, Patterson coach Greg Hartsell welcomed the win. But he wasn’t satisfied with the lack of offense his team exhibited.

“I just think we came into this game way too relaxed,” Hartsell said. “We couldn’t string two passes together. I thought we played terrible.”

On Monday, Patterson (13-2, 5-0) dominated Hilmar, last year’s defending Division V section champion, behind three goals from Rodrigo Aldana in a 6-1 win at home. Sergio Hinojosa had two goals to increase his team-leading tally to 17.

Two days removed from their offensive blitz against Hilmar, Patterson struggled to find offensive rhythm in the first half against Orestimba. While the Tigers had three free kicks and a couple of corner kicks in Orestimba territory, nothing translated into a successful attack.

Patterson kept Orestimba goalie Jorge Lopez on guard by dictating the offensive tempo, but couldn’t break through in the first half.

“We should have swept them off the field,” Hartsell said. “Orestimba was just playing for a tie and kicking the ball around. I was really disappointed.”

Hinojosa had two shots on goal within close range, but neither found their intended target as Patterson and Orestimba remained scoreless through 60 minutes.

Patterson got its first break moments later. Raphael Alcauter advanced into the left side of the goalie box and was undercut by an Orestimba defender on an illegal slide tackle for a penalty kick.

With the game deadlocked at 0-0, Alcauter’s initial shot on goal was stopped by Lopez, but Alcauter knocked in the rebound to the left corner of the net.

“I was so nervous my legs were shaking,” Alcauter said of his pre-kick mentality. “I’ve never been so nervous in my life. I thought I was going to miss it. Luckily, I put it in.”

Patterson added an insurance goal minutes later when Eduardo Chin’s deft pass past the Orestimba defense found a streaking Michael Laines, who scored past Lopez to cap the scoring at 2-0.

“I thought we were very overconfident, but we got the job done,” Alcauter said.

Junior varsity
Patterson remained unbeaten in league play with a 4-1 win over Orestimba. Leopoldo Rangel, the team’s leading scorer, scored, as did Sammy Gomez, Edwin Sanchez and Christian Artiaga. The Tigers improved to 4-0 in the WAC.

“Orestimba couldn’t stop us anymore (once) they got tired,” Patterson coach Alfredo Virgen said. “We have much more defense on the JV team. It’s like building a house — you have to start with the foundation, and our foundation is defense.”

Patterson resumes league play Monday night at home against Central Catholic at 7 p.m., preceded by the junior varsity at 5:30 p.m. Patterson beat Central 4-0 in the team’s first league contest Sept. 12.
