Patterson girls golfers bounce back from Hughson loss Print E-mail

A loss against league contender Hughson to start the week easily could have cast a shadow on the Patterson girls golf team’s follow-up matches with Hilmar and Modesto Christian.

Instead, Patterson rallied as the Tigers shot two of their best scores of the season in victories Tuesday and Thursday, matching last year’s league win total with four matches remaining in the season.

“Playing Hughson got the competitive juices flowing with the girls,” Patterson coach Jason Oliveira said. “I like seeing that. They responded to the loss with a 202 on Tuesday and 205 Thursday. I’m just very happy with where we’re going.”

Patterson lost by four strokes Monday to Hughson at River Oaks Golf Course in Ceres, 153-157, to start the three-match week.

Jessica Hansen led Patterson with a 34 on River Oaks’ par-27 front nine, followed by Brooke Borba’s 38, Molly Conte’s 41 and Kendra Young’s round of 44.

Hughson’s Erica Ballard dropped in a 1-under par 26 to lead Hughson, followed by Cassie Anderson’s round of 33.

“I tip my hat to Hughson,” Oliveira said. “Watching Erica shoot 1-under par was fun to watch. Far and away, we were out of our comfort zone with being on the other end of the spectrum from our home course.”
Patterson (9-2 Valley Foothill League) cruised to a 70-stroke victory Tuesday at Diablo Grande, anchored by Hansen’s top score of 43. Borba shot a 48, Conte 53 and Young 58.

The Tigers began the season with a 240-242 loss to Central Valley on Aug. 21 at Diablo Grande, but have since trimmed their scores to as low as 202 at Diablo.

“They’re kind of settling into the front nine (holes) of the Ranch Course at Diablo,” Oliveira said. “That’s probably the biggest thing to attribute to the scores coming down. The more you play, the better you play, usually.”

Patterson maintained its competitive edge in a 205-246 win Thursday at Modesto Muni Golf Course. Hansen matched her Tuesday score with a 43, followed by Conte’s 49, Borba’s 55 and Young’s 58.

“The only prematch goal we had was having Molly (Conte) sub-50,” Oliveira said. “If Molly is under 50, that will give us some good things. She responded with the 49 by putting and shooting the ball much better. The girls navigated Muni’s trees very well.”

Patterson faces Central Catholic, unbeaten in league, Tuesday at Dryden Golf Course in Modesto, followed by Gustine on Thursday at Diablo Grande.
