Girl Scout Troop 438 hopes residents will get their dogs spruced up, grab their leashes and get on down to Saturday’s Petpalooza Pet Fair downtown.

The fair, in conjunction with the city’s Skate the Circle, will run from 2 p.m. to dusk.

The girls are working on their Bronze Award, the highest level for junior Scouts in fourth to sixth grade, and they have invited local pet groups to attend. Each girl must work on a 15-hour community service project to receive the award.

The day will also feature pet agility demonstrations on an obstacle course.

“I’ve always loved animals,” Lisa Vossekuil said. “It kills us to see abused and abandoned animals. So we are trying to raise awareness about abuse and how to stop it.”

Fellow Scout Elena Gonzalez said the troop wants to show its neighbors how to be responsible pet owners.

“I hope everyone can come and learn something new about their pets,” Elena said.

The  Pooch Pageant will begin at 3:30 p.m., and prizes will be given for a plethora of categories: best smile, owner look-alike, pretty eyes, coolest trick, diva doggy, Disney doggy, longest ears, most vocal, fluffiest, weirdest trick, biker doggy and Halloween doggy.

Girl Scout Leader Melinda Gonzalez said the fair’s Kids Zone will be visited by mascots Sparky from the local fire department, McGruff the Crime Dog and Wally the Walnut and Al the Almond from the Modesto Nuts baseball team.

A silent auction will have pet items up for bids until 5 p.m. The money raised, along with donations accepted that day, will go to pet rescue groups to pay for medical bills and pet supplies.

Some Petpalooza participants include pet stores, veterinarians, kennels, rescue groups, the American Red Cross and the Patterson Fire Department. East of Eden Rescue will be there with adoptable pets. The Scooby Snack Shack will be open all day to sell food for both humans and pets.

The Girl Scouts are also asking for donations of blankets, pillows, pet cages, toys, food, accessories and old Frisbees. Each girl has picked a pet rescue, and the troop will split up the money earned.

The girls will also set up a bulletin board for folks who have found or lost a pet. The troop is looking for a local place to permanently house the board.
