"They were energized and fired up"
- Read Weinzheimer, Coach The Patterson Redskins varsity football team has what every youth football coach could hope for: consistent sources of offense and depth in the backfield. Versatility in the backfield played a big part for the Redskins on Saturday as three different running backs scored in Patterson’s 42-6 win against the Big Valley Sabres at home. ![]() Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator Rodney Lawson erupted for three touchdowns, including two in the first half, and Nickolous Ward and Raymond Brooks added touchdowns on the ground. “What really holds us is our depth of our running backs,” coach Rene Cabada said. “The kids all want to get the ball and get in the end zone. We try to share the ball. I’m pretty happy with their performance today.” Brooks’ interception with five minutes, 20 seconds left in the game helped set up a 54-yard scoring drive, which he finished with a 1-yard touchdown run. “It always feels good,” Brooks said of scoring. “It feels better to know that I have teammates to support me.” Carlos Ruelas caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ricardo Ramirez during a 20-point onslaught in the first quarter. Patterson improved to 4-1. Junior varsity A late fumble near the Big Valley goal line with 18 seconds left in the game prevented Patterson from scoring the go-ahead touchdown, giving the Sabres JV squad a 13-12 win. Justin Chavez’s 2-yard quarterback sneak enabled Patterson (2-3) to keep pace with Big Valley for a 6-6 halftime score. Tanner Torres took a reverse handoff and raced 47 yards for a touchdown with 1:35 left in the third quarter, giving Patterson a 12-6 lead. Big Valley countered on a 5-yard touchdown run with 5:22 left in the game. The Sabres scored the extra point on a 2-yard run to lead 13-12. Patterson marched down the field to the 1-yard line, only to fumble on third down. Big Valley recovered and ran out the clock for the win. “All we need is five wins to make the playoffs,” Coach Larry Olmos said. “We just need to make some minor adjustments on the technical stuff. For their size, they’ll be a tough team to beat. If we can jell some more, you’ll see a different team.” Novice Big Valley was no match for Patterson’s novice squad, which rode the strength of two first half touchdowns from running back Jamal Broussard to a 45-6 win. Following a 26-0 halftime lead, Patterson (4-1) showed no signs of relenting on touchdown runs of seven yards from Ruben Rosas and 83 yards from Daniel Cota. Victory Chavez capped the scoring with a 30-yard touchdown scamper. “They were energized and fired up,” coach Read Weinzheimer said. “‘Our house’ was their big cheer today. We only ran two (types of) plays today. There were no fancy reverses or trick plays, just off-tackle runs with the lead fullback.” Junior Novice Patterson (2-2) shut out Big Valley 18-0 behind touchdowns from Jamie Jimenez, Christopher Garcia and Daniel Valverde. Patterson’s defense was equally dominant, limiting Big Valley to just three pass attempts, and recording several sacks in the process. “Our defense just completely shut them down,” coach John Guevarra said. “We dominated them. Our defensive line got through their offensive line almost every play. All around, everyone did well.” The Redskins host the Patriots beginning 10 a.m. Saturday with the junior novice and ending with the varsity at 4 p.m. To reach Play Editor Mike Vanden Bosch at the Irrigator, call 892-6187 or e-mail him at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
