“I don’t think we prepared ourselves for the race as well as we could have.”
— Dave Klein PHS cross country coach ANGELS CAMP — Mother Nature did the Patterson High cross country team a favor when rain gave way to sunshine at Saturday afternoon’s Frogtown Invitational. The hills of the Mother Lode weren’t as forgiving, though, as Patterson’s times trailed off from a personal record-heavy league meet the week before. “I don’t think we prepared ourselves for the race as well as we could have,” Patterson cross country coach Dave Klein said. “We got there an hour before the first race when it was raining. I really don’t know if we were prepared to run the course.” The hilly 2.8-mile course proved challenging for both the boys and girls squads. Jose Cortez headlined the boys with a 28th-place time of 17 minutes, 10 seconds, two seconds slower than his 17:08 finish Sept. 19 on a flat course in Newman. “I really expected Jose to be under 17 minutes and in the 16s,” Klein said. “I thought he had a good shot. I know he could have gone in the 16s.” Jorge Vazquez fought through an apparent illness to finish 65th in 18:35. “I don’t think Jorge felt really well,” Klein said. “I think he had trouble in the hills. All of them complained … the course was probably steeper than anything we’ve run before.” Evan Bachelder, whose 19:44 time placed him 99th, was followed by Lance Michael in 19:56 for 103rd, Omar Cortez in 20:59 for 127th, and Nick Santillan with a 145th-place time of 22:25. On the girls side, Amanda Moreno missed a personal best by a little more than 20 seconds, placing 32nd out of 180 runners with a time of 21:29. “I thought Amanda had a shot at getting under 21 minutes,” Klein said. “When she finished, I think she felt like it, too.” Teammate Melissa Vega, the only other varsity girls runner for Patterson, finished in 50th place in 22:39. Three varsity girls runners did not compete because of softball-related events. Freshman Briana Cuen finished the freshmen girls race in 17:28, good for 44th place. Freshman Jack Relva was among the highlights for the Tigers, finishing the 1.9-mile freshman boys course in 11:57. He placed sixth out of about 120 runners and wasn’t far behind the top time of 11:10. “Jack was probably in 30th place when he hit the half-mile mark,” Klein said. “He made up about 24 spots throughout the race. He was right behind the fourth- and fifth-place guys.” Rafa Martinez finished the sophomore boys race in 66th place with a time of 13:33. Patterson’s varsity team is still awaiting the return of injured runners Adriana Araisa and James Dimter. Both are set to be cleared today and could run as early as next week, Klein said. Patterson will host Central Catholic at 4 p.m. today, a race that will take place at T.W. Patterson Sports Park.
