From the moment Dick Day moved to Patterson in 1976, he was hooked on the Irrigator’s Football Contest.
Since then, the football contest has snowballed from a weekly habit into a festive family contest for the Day family. The former Patterson High principal of 11 years earned bragging rights among the clan when he picked 19 of 22 games to win $20 in Week 3 of the contest. “I’ve played in it pretty consistently since 1976,” Day said. “That’s when we came to town. My son, Rick, won when he was in the fourth or fifth grade.” Not only is the Day family one of the first to submit entries inside the football-shaped entry bin each week, but the family also has its own rivalry of sorts. “There’s a bigger contest between the five of us,” Day said. “My son, nephew, daughter-in-law, and wife, Betty, all play. There’s a little competition there. I’m more of a college football fan than the NFL. The sports fan is my wife.” Benito Covarrubias won a smog check from Patterson Auto Care after being the closest contestant to predict the outcome of Patterson High’s game against Sierra of Manteca. Covarrubias picked Patterson to win, 45-17; the Tigers won 48-24. “I’m kind of surprised,” Covarrubias admitted. “I thought I went too high on the score, but I was going to stick with it. I’ve been playing since the 1980s. I just keep an eye on sports. I read the paper all the time to find out what’s going on with the teams.” Since no contestant correctly picked all 22 games, the contest’s jackpot increases to $400 for Week 4. Entries are due at the Patterson Irrigator, 26 N. Third St., by 5 p.m. Friday, or they may be postmarked by 5 p.m. Friday via the U.S. Postal Service.
