“A lot of people were scared. We got text messages saying people had been stabbed.”

Violence gripped Patterson High School’s campus this week when a series of fights broke out Wednesday, injuring four people and leading to nine arrests.

Police arrested four students later that day for suspicion of fighting on school grounds and five more students on Thursday. Early police reports showed 150 students involved in the fight, but police later narrowed it down to 12 or 15 kids. Only four people, including a school faculty member, received minor injuries.

“They were swinging at teachers, the principal — it was a wild, wild day,” said DeCarlos Kaigler, director of fiscal services for Patterson Unified School District.

Homicide detectives with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department headed up the investigation because of rumors that the incident was connected to the Aug. 11 killing of Patterson resident Emmanuel Moreno at a party in Crows Landing.

The melee also followed a related fight at Ward and American Eagle avenues Monday, according to police, in which three people were arrested for suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after a golf club was used in the fight.

In that incident, a 16-year-old and 17-year-old were booked into county juvenile hall, and 25-year-old Jose Castillon was booked into Stanislaus County Jail.

Fire alarm triggers fights
Wednesday’s mass scuffle started when about 1,000 students were gathered on the school’s lawn along Seventh Street at 9:45 a.m., according to witnesses and police.

Students had evacuated classrooms after a student triggered a false fire alarm.

While most students stood on the grass, a fight between a few people broke out, leading to several fights, most witnesses said.

“I’ve never seen pandemonium like this,” Patterson High School senior Brian Sousa said Wednesday afternoon.

“It was like a big ... mosh pit, sort of, but worse,” said another student, who identified himself only as Joseph.

A few students said they thought at least one of the fights was either unrelated to the others or staged. However, the mass skirmishes left Patterson High School staff helpless.

“No teachers could do anything,” said Patterson resident Stacy Silva, who witnessed the incident from across the street. “No adults could do anything.”

School employees attempted to break up the fights but could not do so, she said. Police arrived, but it would be about 15 minutes before officers could control the crowd.

“They did everything they could do, but they were outnumbered by far,” said a man who witnessed the fight. “More and more fights broke out even with the cops right there.”

One student said he saw someone with a small knife, but Stanislaus County sheriff’s spokesman Royjindar Singh said no one was stabbed.

Most students said the incident looked much worse than it was.

“It looked like all of us were fighting, but we weren’t,” Patterson High School senior Sandra Pementel said.

Image

Singh said a relatively few amount of students caused a lot of havoc.

“The people actually physically fighting these students were going to other areas and randomly punching other students,” he said.

Stuck in class
The campus went on lockdown almost immediately after the fight. The high school kept students in classrooms as deputies searched for a girl who reportedly had a gun.

Students’ experiences in classrooms varied. Some reported just sitting in the dark, while others said they looked at media reports online. Rumors flew.

“A lot of people were scared,” freshman Adrian Laurel said. “We got text messages saying people had been stabbed.”

Students were not allowed to leave class to go to the bathroom. As a result, some used sinks in the back of science classrooms or special medical kits, junior Martin Moreno said.

Image

One girl later reported she felt “violated” after male police officers put their hands in her pants pockets.

Police received reports of more possible violence as they searched the campus; someone reported there could be a drive-by shooting.

In addition to Patterson Police Service and county sheriff’s deputies, officers from other departments, such as the Modesto and Turlock police departments and California Highway Patrol, were on hand to help.

Police went through every room in the school but found no weapons. They started releasing students at about 1:30 p.m. The only students prevented from leaving were those being questioned by police.
In addition to Patterson High, nearby Las Palmas Elementary School went on lockdown for a short while.

Anxiously waiting
Dozens of parents anxiously waited along Ninth Street in hopes of retrieving their children before school officials released the students. Some parents talked with their children on cell phones or sent text messages as a sheriff’s helicopter circled overhead.

“I feel like I’m going to throw up,” parent Melissa Carney said as she waited for students to be released.
Kaigler stood in front of the school with a map, telling parents what side of the school their children eventually would exit from if they knew what class their child was in.

Many parents complained that the school did not call to tell them about the fight and the lockdown. Some students and parents said there had been forewarnings, such as rumored fights that broke out Monday and messages posted on MySpace.com.

Longtime residents were shocked that such a thing could happen at Patterson High.

“I’ve lived here for 14 years, and this is the first time I felt like I wasn’t in a small town,” junior Maggie Bradley said Thursday.

Meanwhile, residents close to the campus reported people were hiding in their backyards.

Stepping up security
Image
Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator
Though no weapons were found, police confiscated three live shotgun shells found in a classroom Thursday. Singh said deputies believe the shells were part of a prank to scare campus officials.
Heightened security at the Patterson High campus Thursday included gang detectives and undercover police officers. Sheriff’s cars were parked around the high school, and police pulled over at least one vehicle on Las Palmas Avenue just before school got out after it appeared that a student had a weapon under his jacket. The item turned out to be a small steel rod, but another student was found with marijuana.

The sheriff’s department also had its entire gang task force at Friday night’s Patterson High School football game.

The department has already sent extra patrols to Patterson lately because of a surge in gang activity.

Image
Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator
Police suspect Wednesday’s brawl could have been connected to the Moreno shooting, which Patterson police Chief Tyrone Spencer said had been gang-related. However, Moreno’s brother said Moreno was not in a gang.

Though police would not say directly what gang Moreno had been in, Patterson Police Services recently implied during several gang forums that he was a member of the Runners — a fairly new gang based in west Patterson. They get their name from Roadrunner Drive in the Heartland Ranch housing development, according to police.

Students said the fights Wednesday were between members of the Norteños and the Runners. Singh said investigators also believe that is the case.

A student close to Runners members said he viewed the brawl in a positive light.

“It’s about pride and respect,” Via Uloa said.

Uloa said he is not in the Runners, but many of his cousins are members.

“This is the best thing to ever happen to our school,” he said.

Meanwhile, parents had varied reactions about how the incident was handled.

Tim Dwyer said he was impressed with how the school controlled the incident.

“They couldn’t have done a better job,” he said.

Fellow parent Lisa Lopez indicated that district officials could still learn from the incident.

“They need to have a backup plan,” she said. “I’m not mad at them.

I just want to make sure my kid’s safe.”

She expressed shock that such an incident happened in Patterson.

“I’ve lived here all my life, and this is crazy,” she said.

I really don't understand why the school district "allow" thugs and gangsters who don't value life to be part of the school system. We need a city council, Mayor, Superintendent someone who has a "Backbone" and not a jelly spine to rid our schools and community of this trash.

I'm a student at PHS and i was right there by the fights. Firstly a dress code isn't going to change anything. Students should be able to wear whatever they wish just as long as it is appropriate. Also i don't think that these gang members just don't value their life, they just have nothing else to keep them occupied so they turn to gangs. If they didn't value their lives then they wouldn't even bother going to school and they would just roam the streets all the time. The school must not recognize who is a gang member seeing as so many gang members attend the school. Most don't cause problems in school its only a few that usually do. I guess they figure that its better to try and help someone get out of gangs by going to school and doing something with their life..it doesn't always work for everyone though. Oh and P-Love..you are completely right..the parents just need to install some discipline in their children's lives maybe that will keep them from getting into trouble.

Napier:

First and foremost. A school is an institution of learning. Why were the gangs or thugs fighting? Why do they wear special colors or marks? If they don't have anything to "Keep them occupied" why attend school and cause havoc in a school environment. School is not a "Daycare". Gangs and thugs use schools as a "Recruitment". Please, give me a break.

personal expression is for personal time!
I say uniforms..and i don't want to hear"some people can't aford it"
ya right..give me a break! soon as the mom and pop shops hear the middle school and high school are going uniforms..they will have boxes of uniforms for sale a.s.a.p. hey all that stripper gear, thug attire, and goth threads are not cheap.
And yes style of dress does make a difference..in my day certian rags placed a particular way and other things meant it was on.
these criminal use there clothing as a calling card to put people on notice!it is there armor an extension of their attitude. so don't give me that it does not matter.
I also don't want to hear "oh they just dress like b.girls and b.boys"..not so, a thug with a specific colored rag..is just that!

Criminals!!!
written by Marty V. , September 24, 2007
Wow!, I agree with you 110%

A criminal is criminal. These thugs terrorized the school. They should be labeled as "Terrorists" and brought up on Felony charges. They fought teachers, faculty and brought terror upon other students. The parents should also be arrested for harboring these terrorists. A dress code should be installed and enforced!

One more thing..if you want the schools to enforce a harder dress code..do NOT push any more of their fundrasing products!!!Cali generates enough tax revenue(and so does patterson) demand they spend there money wisely. do not donate another box of tissue, paper etc... oh sure many will say it's just hurting the kids..i say the will be ok.having unruly students who start brawls and threaten innocent kids is far more damaging then not having paper, tissue,or money from cookie dough sales! These are public schools people! Funded by our dollars..demand they enforce harsher rules for dress and kids who display bad behavior!Reward students who diplay good conduct!
Lets protect the rights of the innocent kids and ones who want to learn and enjoy school.weed out the problem kids and get them help a.s.a.p.Start this prcoess as early as soon as it is spotted..even if it means a 4th grader gets dealt with.Better now then when they are in 11th grade.
Boycott Patterson functions and schhool ones as well.Do purchase yearbooks, school shirts etc.. The dollar speaks loud and clear!if you cannot protect my child then I do not want to sell your x-mas wrapping paper! If the powers that be down at the city cannot find the $$$ to employ our own security for the city ,then I don't want to attend the chilli-cook off or Apricot festival! I will take my shopping dollars elsewhere as well!

Though I will not be able to attend tonights meeting, and voice my own opinions, I dont think a dress code is where we should start. A gang is gang, no matter which way we see it. All week long people talked about this situation. One comment made to me was "well this didnt happen ten years ago", Of course not,10 years ago, these kids were only 5,6, or even 7! hello...it all starts with the upbringing in the home or their enviroment. It doesnt all start up in highschool , it can start as early as elementary, kids looking up to their siblings or family members thinking its cool to be in a gang or be just like big brother. Its not just the Highschool we need to be concerned about... its all our schools in this community. There has even been a few incidents with my own child, who is only in the 3rd grade, being picked on by fifth graders. Its starts as early as a few comments, then leads to name calling all the way until they figure, hey I got a gun, I want to use it and they start hanging in crowds that are doing the same thing. This vicious cycle needs to be stopped. I really hope matters brought up at tonights meeting, will be taken seriously. It is not all about a community who wants to complain, and put our town on the map, It is about families concerned for our children's safety, which comes first and foremost in my book. I hope you all express your concerns and get through to these upperhand people, and make them see this is serious and can cause and caused alot of damage to our community, Good Luck Patterson!

Community Meeting
written by Big Iceman , September 24, 2007
It was a good meeting. The media was there, wow! Anyway, it was a good constuctive meeting of the community. The school could have selected a larger building to hold it. Uhmm, I think parents should be held responsible for their childs behavior. This issue has to be "nipped in the bud". If not, it will get worse. After this meeting, I have become a P.T.B.S. (Proud To Be a Snitch) I will call the Patterson Police on anything suspicious.

I do not mean to sound so negative, but a town meeting will not solve anything. Instead of spending over a million dollars to install artificial gra*s, why not spend it on a teen center or something more useful. These kids need a hobby something to keep them out of trouble. most people are going to say that oh so what if we spent a million dollars for gra*s, you probably never played sports. Yes i did play football at PHS and to spend that type of money on turf is absurd for such a small town, use it wisely like to repair PHS,it has been the same since 1970. Upgrade it more and build some sort of community center. Also strong favor for not spending so much money on the Apricot festival, all it gives is a reason to get intoxicated in public. Spending money on it is also absurd. You might say that it is tradition, but I find it outdated. OUT with the old and in with the new.

goodness...
written by Former Patterson Resident , September 25, 2007
I knew all this would happen eventually. My mother took me out of that school for this very reason. That school is so worried about how their football teams look then the quality of life for their students. First of all, Patterson didn't think about one thing when they decided to let the town boom. The higher the population... the HIGHER the crime. Especially since most of Patterson's new resisdents are from the Bay Area. The Bay area has some of the highest crime this side of Nor Cal. I know... I lived there... Anyway, having a dress code isn't the only thing that needs to change. They need another high school or two, with smaller cla*s sizes. This will separate a lot of students and allow teachers to be more dedicated to their sutdents (y'know.. like school in the old days) rather than each kid being a number. Teachers could pay more attention to the quality of life for their kids. ALSO.... the more you take extra carricular activities out of school the more you going to have kids with no desire to attend. Not everyone can be a football player, not everyone likes football... and....... have you seen most of PAtterson latley... most of the people that live there, especially the people "on the other side of the tracks" cannot afford to be in sports.
I know my thoughts are random but I have few ideas (and they are impossible) that would make the school system a better place in PAtterson.

1. at least 2 high schools
2. Better teachers that ACTUALLY care about their students (ppl who are in gangs come from families that don't care about them, if they could go to school where ppl care then maybe there might be a change)
3. Dress code.... they DO work, despite what the "normal" teenager might think...and there are ways to afford them... the government will pay for anything that will keep their butts from looking bad.
4. More extracarricular cla*ses that allow students to grow in other skills, cause you know what? You BARELY use anything you learned in school in the real world. All they care about is your experiance and skills.
5. BETTER MONEY MANAGEMENT IN THE SCHOOLS AND THE CITY ( i agree with everyone about the Apricot Fiesta... its crap... its stupid.... gosh its like a really bad flee market)
6. And.... sadly..... more SECURITY... I guess its time to bring in metal detectors and drug dogs on a REGULAR EVERY DAY basis.... and officers around school to maintain. The way that school is laid out its way tooooooo easy to get away with stuff.

anyway... I don't live there anymore... however, I still care about the place, and its sad to see such a once nice little community turn into thug paradise. The best way to make change is to get everyone involved. Man... has anyone seen the movie FREEDOM WRITERS... its s true story, maybe you should watch it for tips.

Whew!

Something I don't understand. Their are people who are upset with the school renovating the football stadium. Why didn't these people say something? From what the Superintendent said, the funds used wasn't school funds (if I remember correctly). Second, my family and I are from the Bay Area (Sunnyvale). My kids aren't in any gangs, my neighbors kids aren't in any gangs. Hmmmmm.

Third, it may hurt some people's feelings, but all those kids involved with the melee should be expelled. Also, where was the Mayor of Patterson last night? Was Mayor Campo there?

runnahz up: why do have to represent the bay in such a negative way? is that what the bay area is all about? being born and raised there, i'd say it's definitely not! what do you represent other than a kid that doesn't have a real genuine sense of family and community? family meaning your mom, dad, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles... NOT your fellow runnahz! life will teach you that only your real family will stick by you. many of those runnahz will do what they need to save their own a*s.

sounds like you've got some hard lessons to learn and i pray that you take everything everyone is saying in, give it all some serious thought and get it through your head before you end up doing all your thinking behind bars.

I agree "bay area Born" why do these kids need to represent bay area natives in such a bad light! I am proud to be from the Bay Area , but I am also proud to be a part of a community I which now call home for both my myself and my children. Sure they miss the bay area, but they dont go running around causing HAVOC! Im literally tired of the patterson natives generally speaking negative about us " bay area people" I do give much respect who were all born and raised here and lived here their entire lives, But I give just as much reepect for those who choose to move to this town and afford a home, and be decent citizens of this community, not to mention help pay for all the upgrades being brought, meaning, new schools, new palm trees along Sperry, fire department, Aquatic center, etc etc. We need to stop pointing those nosey little fingers and work together for our children's safety and FUTURE. They will be put in our shoes one day, and grow up to be concerned parents, teachers, and part of community who will work together and control this problem, that is so widely spread. PATTERSON, did you actually think your town, would not eventually grow, and include more violence? Things change, and it is time for us to grow and be a part of that change, Negative or not! We need positive influences brought to our town, learn from other cities who do face the same situations and learn from them. Lets MOVE ON SHALL WE!!

Im sorry but Yes dress code does make a difference..I agree it is not the end all to be all but it is a start.
Dres code does one many things
1. restores authority over kids..yes I said it AUTHORITY!
kids need it ,especially those who don't have any at home.
Im tired of adults wanting to be childrens friends!or don't have the backbone to say NO! If you are a techer and are afraid to get punched by some unruly teen b/c you tell them they are being out of line then you need to go tech preschool! Im 29 yrs old and I saw only once a teen in my high school punch our track coach.Gues what happened that kid got slammed!!!! I don't advocate violence but if some punk kid want ot step up then he needs to get smacked down!!! I despise lawyers that defend these kids and there spineless parents! your kids is a jerk and he got what was coming to him!Texas style!!! One thing my parents told me is "We will never be your friends!" and gues what I was fine,I respected my parents and what they said. There rules were the law of land! Now in these days and times kids are not put in their place. Kinda like if you let an Alpha dog take over youe house..
2.Dress code takes the economice factor out of the school.
No more the haves get to show off there flashy gear and the have nots get to feel out of place.Everyone is on equal ground.Fashion is for the runway and not school.Especially since for whatever reason the school has a hard time enforces what little dress code they do have.
When we had too much makeup on or our dress was too short or guys boxers were hanging out of their pants, guess what!!! They got a oneway ticket home for the day and saturday school.
3. Dress code will help allow students to keep their eyes from wondering in cla*s! if a chick is hot she will be hot in a uniform at least you will not know her Victoria Secrets.
Dress is just one step in the right direction...Authority being number one.
Parent who oppose dress code just don't know how to say no to there kids! they are the ones who buy those god forsken shirt dresses you see on the irrigator front page! Those parents are the ones who need ot be held accountable fully for there children behavior! They are parents who let there kids swear, watch whatever and do whatever.trying to be there friends.

I think having the meeting at Apricot valley is absurd! Why not have this kind of meeting...say at the new football field, if all these families could come out to support the team ,Many more families can sure come out and voice their concerns for their city! Not Everybody in this town can fit in that cafeteria! Not just that, at least their are plenty of bleachers to sit on!! And MAYOR, nows that time to step up and show concern for your city!!

To RB Mission
written by PI Reader , September 26, 2007
Sir (Ma'am?), There you go..stereotyping the gangster thug with your writing skills and expression. Please, if you want to speak on behalf of the "gangsters" or those stereotyped, please spell and express yourself correctly. I promise you, more people will take you seriously.

Challenge Day
written by Sherry , September 26, 2007
This is just a thought, but I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of Challenge Day? I have been checking out the website, and I think that maybe we should try this at our school(s). The website is www.challengeday.org Maybe if enough positive adults and children got involoved, we could try this out. I think at this point and time, we as parents need to get involoved as well.

Hey joe somebody, when pointing out someone's mistakes in spelling and/or grammer (ie., your attack on ib mission) you may want to check your own spelling and grammer. The proper sentence is "...teen center is smaller THAN my garage." Not "then my garage." Although, I'm sure no one else, unfortunatly, noticed the error.

Also wanted to say--a dress code will not do an ounce of good. I don't care what you're wearing, if you're in a gang, your in a gang.

'A student close to Runners members said he viewed the brawl in a positive light.

“It’s about pride and respect,” Via Uloa said.

Uloa said he is not in the Runners, but many of his cousins are members.

“This is the best thing to ever happen to our school,” he said.'

This is quoted from the above article. He says it's about respect and pride. Doesn't this tell us that what some of these kids are lacking are respect and pride? They need to get these things from gang affiliations? What makes you think and dress code will provide these kids with respect and pride? These things come from home and parents. They don't feel repected and proud of themselves. We need to learn how to instill this in these kids if they're not getting it from their family and home.

If you "runnahz" rep the bay, why don't all of you stay in the bay. Oh wait, you aren't even the ones making the financial decisions or "hustlin." Your parents are. Maybe they are too caught up with the bills that they don't even pay attention to their own "runnah" kids.

Wasted Energy!
written by Respected Bay Area Mom , September 27, 2007
People, Lets not waste energy on these kids. They have no respect for you, nor any for themselves. I am embarrased that they use the bay area as their reason for acting like this. There is no excuse! Their parents, yes obvioulsly are too busy to care, and thats really sad. Unfortunately this has happened here in Patterson. Though, I feel you guys should not target every bay area family that has moved here, or the ones that have teenagers, I have been blessed with respectful children, and Luckily I am able to stay home and give them the time of day. These kids obviously crave attention that their affiliations are giving them, in the end we all know, friends come and go, what will they do then? We need to use this energy wasted and work towards fixing the problem. Its a start!I recently read the article Where Parks & Recreation asked teenagers what they wanted most here in Patterson. They all seem to agree, Movie theatres,a bowling alley, a mall. Though its seems not as close at all, lets work towards getting these outlets to keep not just our teens occupied, but families as well. It's nice to take the whole family out for a day! Suppose these parents who do commute to and from the bay during the week, but home on weekends, had things to actually do with their kids while they are home, Patterson would be a whole nicer placer to live! IF THERE IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY! smilies/wink.gif

Bad Parents...
written by city employee , April 03, 2008
The parents of these kids are worthless. All of these kid's parents would rather work then take care of thier children. These parents teach these kids how to be thugs. Most of these parents are blind to the fact thier children are worthless. Most kids at PHS are failing. These kids are our future....HA give me a break. These kids are worthless.
