“I’m just frustrated. You have a team that you know can do so much more than what they’re showing out there.”
— Jennifer Hamm PHS volleyball coach ![]() Elias Funez / Patterson Irrigator While the Tigers showed glimpses of greatness amid a 4-4 preseason and more recently, a 2-2 win-loss record at the Golden Valley Tournament, inconsistency and a lack of execution arose in losses to Gustine and Livingston this week. “I’m just frustrated,” Hamm said Thursday after Patterson’s four-game loss to Livingston. “You have a team that you know can do so much more than what they’re showing out there. They just don’t show the desire and want they normally show.” Patterson previously had lost to Gustine on Tuesday. A slow start against Livingston, marked by a sluggish Patterson offense, brought the Wolves (2-6 overall, 2-2 WAC) a 25-11 Game 1 win. Despite trailing 6-1 to start Game 2, Patterson bounced back with strong serving and net play to tie the game, 12-12, on a kill from outside blocker Shelby Yamamoto. With the help of middle blocker Rebecca Freres (nine kills, 12 blocks), the Tigers (8-11, 1-3 WAC) emerged with a 25-23 win in Game 2 to even the score. “In Game 2, we came out and played so much better,” Hamm said. “That’s the kind of play I should be seeing. We made some really good passes in Game 2.” Hamm mixed up her lineup intermittently by putting Freres at middle blocker and Yamamoto at outside hitter. But when Patterson’s intensity waned to start Game 3, Livingston’s middle blocking tandem of Daisy Salgado (seven kills) and Olivia Andam (nine kills, seven blocks) helped lift the Wolves to a 25-20 Game 3 win. “We were just going to go at them strong,” Livingston coach Suzy Pimentel said. “We have a goal of never letting the ball touch the ground. We were happy to get our setter, Maria Brones, back. Our passing was much better.” Displaying its penchant for comebacks, Patterson overcame a 17-10 deficit by outscoring Livingston 12-2 to take a 22-19 lead in Game 4. Yamamoto had back-to-back aces during the run, and Freres countered hits by Salgado and Andam. Instead of forcing a fifth and decisive game, Livingston came up big with six straight points to finish out the game and match. “We’ll get up in the score, take the lead, and then we’ll get back into our comfort zone,” Hamm said. “We got to get it together.” Patterson’s junior varsity squad prevailed in its three-match marathon, 15-25, 25-14, 15-9. The Tigers had nine team blocks, led by Manpreet Grewal’s five blocks, and Stephanie Barraza had 11 digs on defense. Patterson improved to 8-8 overall, 2-2 in league. Livingston won the freshmen game, 25-17, 25-17. Patterson’s freshmen team had just seven players suited up, including a few players that weren’t at school Thursday. Patterson resumes league play Tuesday against Hilmar at home at 7 p.m. To reach Play Editor Mike Vanden Bosch at the Irrigator, call 892-6187 or e-mail him at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
