NEWMAN — On a flat, sand-compressed course conducive to fast times and personal records, the Patterson High cross country team lived up to its billing as the likely challenger to league frontrunner Livingston.

Patterson ran away with the top times in both the boys and girls 3.1-mile races at Wednesday’s tri-meet with Orestimba and Gustine. Patterson also won the boys and girls team scores.

Patterson High cross country runner Jose Cortez set a lofty goal in his 3.1-mile race. Though his finish of 17 minutes, eight seconds was a minute slower than his goal, he defeated the second-place runner by more than a minute.

“I was trying to aim for 16 minutes, 10 seconds,” said Cortez, who also competes on the soccer team and runs distance events for the track team in the spring. “I felt tired the last mile because of the wind. My goal is to run the same pace every mile — in 5:40.”

Fellow soccer players Jorge Vazquez and Eduardo Chin battled for second place. Vazquez passed the 1-mile mark in 5:43 ahead of Chin’s 1-mile time of 5:50, but Chin rallied to finish the 2-mile time in 11:31, three seconds ahead of Vazquez.

At the 3-mile mark, the two were neck-in-neck until Vazquez surged ahead to finish in 18:22 for second place. Chin finished in 18:40.

“That’s my best time ever,” Vazquez said. “I was trying to keep pace with Jose. When I saw Eduardo at three miles, I started running faster.”

Evan Bachelder had the next best time for Patterson at 19:24, followed by Lance Michael’s time of 19:42. Rounding out Patterson’s boys team was Omar Cortez in 21 minutes flat and Roger Cuestas at 21:31.

“We had a lot of personal records today,” Patterson cross country coach Dave Klein said. “I expected our best times today. If you’re going to run your best time, you want to run on a hard, flat track, and that’s what we got.”

On the girls side, Amanda Moreno and Melissa Vega rekindled their friendly back-and-forth rivalry. This time, Moreno edged out Vega with a 3.1-mile time of 21:17, just ahead of Vega’s mark of 21:47.

“It was a lot easier running on this flatter course,” Moreno said. “The weather was cooler. I think Mr. Klein is really motivated at getting everyone’s spirits up.”

Vega credited her teammates for pushing her toward her time, which was far below her goal of getting lower than 24 minutes.

“I was hoping to be in the 23s,” Vega said. “I made myself happy, and my teammates really pushed me. Amanda was pushing me through the race. When she and I race, it’s competition, and it is also teamwork at the same time.”

Samantha Kramer was third in the girls race in 22:45, followed by older sister, Kaelee Kramer’s time of 23:39. Vanessa Lazcano took fifth in 25:46, and freshman Briana Cuen rounded out the girls squad with a time of 28:31.

In the JV boys race, freshman Jack Relva blazed to a two-mile time of 11:45, including a one-mile time of 5:54, placing him first among the four JV runners.

“The wind made it easier,” Relva said. “The wind gets the hair out of my face. I ran a lot from playing soccer at Creekside.”

JV teammate Rafa Martinez finished in 14:27.

Patterson travels to Angels Camp for today’s Frogtown Invitational.
