“We knew what Tanner was capable of. We talked all week to the kids about staying outside. The more green they see (on the outside), the more yards they’ll get. On both touchdowns today, our runners stayed outside.” - JV coach Larry Olmos ![]() Mike Vanden Bosch/ Patterson Irrigator Following an interception that put Patterson within scoring range, Lawson broke three tackles and rumbled 24 yards for Patterson’s only touchdown late in the third quarter as the varsity Redskins defeated the Modesto Rams, 8-0, on Saturday at Johansen High School. “The line was blocking good,” Lawson said. “The fullback got a good block. I broke one tackle and I saw the end zone. I was going for the end zone.” Lawson’s touchdown scamper put the finishing touches on an otherwise penalty-plagued contest that showcased both defenses. “We knew that Modesto had a real strong defense and it would be tough to score on them,” said Patterson coach Rene Cabada, whose squad improved to 3-1 on the year. “I was kind of expecting a real tough matchup. It wasn’t pretty, but I’ll take the win any time.” Until Lawson’s game-breaker, Patterson and Modesto appeared headed for a scoreless tie in regulation. That would have resulted in overtime, with each team taking possession at the opposing team’s 10-yard line, trading offensive blows until one came out on top. Patterson reached the Modesto 5-yard line before halftime, but the Redskins faltered on a short run, their final play of the first half, and remained scoreless. Modesto didn’t fare much better in the first half, as Patterson lineman Jackie Sutton disrupted the Rams’ first drive for a 5-yard loss on a run. Holding penalties thwarted Modesto’s third drive of the half. Modesto drove to the Patterson 35-yard line to start the second half. But just when the team was poised to score, defensive back and two-way starter Robert Marroquin returned an interception 56 yards to the Modesto 24-yard line with two minutes left in the game. A play later, Lawson burst through the Modesto line and linebackers for the 6-0 lead. Noel Gonzalez kicked the two-point conversion attempt to cap the scoring. Junior Varsity After starting the season 0-2 with tough losses to Westside of Newman and Central of Modesto, Patterson’s junior varsity made it two wins in a row with a 12-7 win. Miles Jacks found the end zone on a 13-yard touchdown run to put Patterson up 6-0 in the first half. Tanner Torres added a much-needed score when he broke through the pack on an off-tackle run and dashed 32 yards with two minutes, seven seconds left in the fourth quarter for a 12-0 lead. “I just tried to go as far as I could,” Torres said of his touchdown run. “I knew it would put us up two touchdowns.” Patterson (2-2) JV coach Larry Olmos said Torres stuck with his blockers just as the coach wanted him to. “We knew what Tanner was capable of,” Olmos said. “We talked all week to the kids about staying outside. The more green they see (on the outside), the more yards they’ll get. On both touchdowns today, our runners stayed outside.” Modesto scored on a 50-yard touchdown pass with nine seconds left to trim Patterson’s lead to 12-7, but Patterson’s John Stokman fell on Modesto’s unsuccessful onside kick to preserve the win. Novice The Patterson novice squad suffered its first loss of the season when a point-after-conversion run fell short late in the fourth quarter, giving Modesto a 7-6 victory. Modesto caught Patterson (3-1) off guard on the first play of the game by scoring on a 74-yard touchdown run. “Modesto ran a good, crisp play,” Patterson novice coach Read Weinzheimer said. “We missed five tackles. Modesto had a lot of big kids. They beat us off the line.” Patterson responded with a 45-yard drive that culminated in a 1-yard touchdown run from Hunter Powers to cut Modesto’s lead to 7-6 with 2:13 left in the game. However, Modesto stopped Patterson at the 5-yard line on the ensuing point-after attempt. Ruben Rosas Jr. starred for the Redskins on defense with two fumble recoveries and an interception. He also batted down a fourth-down pass by Modesto to start the fourth quarter. Junior Novice Patterson rebounded from an 18-6 loss to Hughson on Sept. 8 by trouncing Modesto 24-6. Jaime Jimenez and Christopher Garcia each had a touchdown in the win. Patterson improved to 2-2 overall. Jimenez had Patterson’s lone touchdown in the loss to Hughson.
