“I’d like to thank all of these young athletes for putting the energy into their respective programs. These kids believed enough in themselves and in each other to stay committed to the concept of ‘team.’”

The awards handed out Monday during the Patterson High Fall Sports Banquet put the entire season into perspective, giving the recipients something physical to hold on to in commemoration of their efforts.

Before Patterson Athletic Director and cross country coach Dave Klein recognized each of the key individuals in several fall sports — boys soccer, cross country, volleyball and girls golf — he reminded guests in attendance what the evening’s festivities were all about.

“I’d like to thank all of these young athletes for putting the energy into their respective programs,” Klein said. “These kids believed enough in themselves and in each other to stay committed to the concept of ‘team.’”

Boys soccer
The Tigers finished the boys soccer season with a 23-4-1 overall mark en route to claiming their second-straight Western Athletic Conference championship.

But Patterson fell one game shy of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V title for the second season in a row, losing to Linden in the finals, 2-0.

Still, coach Greg Hartsell remained positive, saying that the future of the program looks bright.
“We had an incredible season this year,” Hartsell said. “I’m really proud of these guys.

“And although it’s sad to see some of the seniors go, I know that we will be back next year.”

It was no surprise that junior Rodrigo Aldana named the Most Valuable Offensive Player. Aldana finished the season with 54 goals.

Most Improved Player honors went to Eduardo Lopez. The Most Valuable Defensive Player award went to Heriberto Hernandez and the Coach’s Award was given to Michael Laines.
The team’s Most Valuable Player was Gustavo Molina.

Laines, Aldana, Molina and Gerardo Cortez earned spots on the WAC’s All-League First Team; and Laines, Cortez and Hernandez were named team captains.

Cross country
The Patterson cross country team also enjoyed several highs this season.

The girls teams won their second consecutive WAC championships, and the Tigers junior varsity girls team sent six runners to the Sac-Joaquin Division III Sections meet, where the team finished second.

The oft-injured varsity boys squad managed to finish second in the WAC.

“It’s tough to make 10 miles a day fun, but we managed to do it,” coach Klein said.

The Tiger Pride Award went to Laura Thompson and Rafael Martinez. Most Dedicated honors went to Maritza Vega, the Most Improved award went to Marisabel Carrillo, and the Most Inspirational honor went to Jack Relva.

Senior Melissa Vega was named Most Valuable Runner.

Both Melissa and Maritza Vega, along with Carrillo, were named to the WAC’s All-League First Team.

Melissa Vega, Relva and Martinez were also named team captains.
Volleyball

After the team struggled to a 3-16 overall record, Patterson volleyball coach Jennifer Hamm remained surprisingly optimistic. Perhaps it’s because her inexperienced Tigers began to turn a new leaf late in the season, winning two of their final three games.

“We accomplished things, and we learned and improved as the season progressed,” Hamm said. “There were plenty of things to look back and laugh at, but we really picked it up at the end.”

Most Improved Player honors went to Nicole D’Onofrio, the Tiger Hustle Award went to Amber Bond and the Tiger Pride Award went to Christine Bays. The Coach’s Award was given to Hailey Hohl.

Seniors Chelsea Taylor and Ashley Metzger were named team captains.

Girls golf

It was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Patterson High girls golf team. Instead, the Tigers were competitive from the start, finishing the season with a 10-6 record.

“We had many bright spots,” coach Jason Oliveira said. “We almost shocked the world against Central Catholic.”

Freshman Izabella Cruz advanced all the way to the Sac-Joaquin Division V Section match.

“When she got it, she got it,” Oliveira said. “Once she got her feet under her, she was brilliant.
“I look forward to the next three years with her.”

The Coach’s Award went to Kendra Young and Alex Delgudice. Cruz was honored as Most Outstanding Golfer.

“She’s only begun,” Oliveira said. “She’s going to be scary good.”

Molly Conte and Samantha Leslie were named team captains.
